so I think I'm going to bite the bullet and build an LS1 FD

fd rx7 has to be one of the best all around body/shell.its perfect not tiny like a miata or long like a supra.but the motor sucks.a ls1 fd is perfect.
i would love to build one.
wait a sec you can pick up a fd shell for 6gs?and my friend has that 350!!
i cant wait to see your build

Good luck on finding $6K shells that are worth a crap or not salvage titles. I have been looking for one for several months. A friend and I have a fresh 13B-REW to drop in one when we find to make some money. We have done 4 13B-REW builds in the past year and a half. Just dropped the third into a silver '93 base this weekend as a matter of fact.
there were at least 3 last time I looked.

There are reasons they are not reliable, but those can be fixed. Blown apex seals are due to bad tuning. The are not tolerant to any pre-ignition or detonation. You have to tune them conservatively. The other big problem is burning through water seals. The new seals from Mazda have a teflon coating on them that prevents that.

Well, how much experience do you nay sayers have with them? Or is it just hear-say? Of the 4 we have built, they all had bad water seals. We have yet to rebuild one with a blown apex seal. Of the 4 motors, 3 were OEM with mileage ranging from 64K to 92K and the 4th was a Pettit rebuild that was the biggest POS I've ever seen and had a pinched water seal due to slap happy assembly. That motor had 6K miles on it
in any event who in the **** picks a no torque rotary over a 300ft lbs at idle V8 for general street debauchery, besides rotards and idiots?

Hylamar is your friend. We've never had a problem. I agree that an LSx FD is badass, but the rotary gets a bad rep from dumbass assemblers and tuners. They can be made as reliable as any other high horspower car. The first one we built was well over 400hp on stock turbos and is still running strong today and raced nearly every weekend and driven daily.
