That look's like a Bigg's cart to me. It helps to understand that Bigg's supermarkets, while very large, modern, and well-stocked, are notoriously cheap. They don't even have people to bag your groceries- you're expected to do that yourself.

The ---- bead is actuall a locking device used to encourage people to return their carts to the front rather than leaving them in the parking lot. This way, they don't have to employ people to gather up carts from the lot.

They have those installed on the carts such that, when the carts are all in the corral at the front of the store, each one is locked to the one behind it. When you want to use a cart, you put a quarter into the mechanism and then you can unlock it. When you're done shopping and have unloaded the cart, you bring it back to the front entrance, re-lock it to the next available cart, and you get your quarter back.

That's pretty smart, unless the desire to use it as an ---- bead overpowers the desire for your quarter.

I suppose that depends if it's a shiny quarter or a dirty ---- bead.

it's like the carts in berkeley that have electronic wheel locks. if you leave the "perimeter" the wheel seizes up and then you're stuck there with your trashbags full of loot.
