$250 in gas, or a gun. Assuming the gun is worth ~$250, I would question if it's something I would trust enough to defend my life. What semi-auto handgun in an effective caliber can you get new for $250, a Hi-point? No thanks, I'll take the gas. Maybe they just give you a $250 gift certificate to use at the local gun store, that would be better.
