Is getting a manifold/turbo/DP from one vendor, and the IC and piping from another DIY? What if you buy a kid from a vendor but it doesn't fit worth **** and you end up having to modify and tweak it?

What constitutes DIY? Building everything from the ground up yourself? Or is it picking and choosing what parts make up your "kit"?

Dude, there are a lot of things to bitch about in the world that are worthy. This one? Not so much.

it has evolved into the diy and prefabbed section.

I consider mine a DIY turbo kit. Some prefabbed components, some DIY fabbed components and piecemeal other purchased parts, both new and used. I think you have to fab parts to make it DIY, and I mean more than a new bracket for your radiator. Manifold, downpipe, charge pipes-something major. IMO, if you didn't have to weld it, it's not DIY. Putting together an ebay universal charge pipe kit tinker-toy style with just cut tubes and couplers is ALMOST DIY. Otherwise, it's just an owner accumulated kit.

I don't know what else you would call it. DIY pile o' parts?

well when you sell the "starter" kit wouldn't you call it a diy turbo kit. it is everything that you may need to put a turbo on a car. It may not be massed produced but it still is a kit none the less.

well maybe I can contribute to the DIY section. Seeing as I don't have the bank roll to drop on a kit alot of it is going to be flea bay, and wrecking yards.

I am currently doing research on a flea bay cast iron manifold. And I have friends that work in wrecking yards. I will most likely buy my own flanges and build my own down pipe.

So will this qualify me for DIY?

I also have a friend with a sheet metal roller, so I will make all my intercooler plumbing

When someone ask me what king of manifold I'm running, it's tough. I say it's an FM manifold, but then I have to say all the **** I did to it to make it work. To me it's my manifold because there are none other like it. Far as I'm concerned I have a DIY turbo setup.

I would have to say that mine is a "DIY Setup" also. Not too many miata guys doing what I am doing.

BTW, The AC/DC Tig welder was probably the best (garage) purchase that I have made in a while.

Note: It seems that I am restricted to one post per month now.
