Would you do this? v.2
So after spending the whole day wetsanding and polishing the miata, i get an e-mail from a guy local to me wanting to trade his 110,XXX mile '83 Porsche 944 5-spd straight-up for my 165,XXX mile 95 bone-stock miata w/ looped PS lines and torn out a/c and hardtop...says the car is in fine condition mechanically and it looks great....so is it aa good deal or pass it up becasue i know exactly jack-**** about Porsche's.

I love 944/951's so for a bone stock miata....I would trade in a heartbeat. Then proceed to mod the **** out of it.

Vash is the only one with any feelings on these things? Somebody talk me either into or out of this damn thing quick before i go crazy thinking baout it

I had an 83 944. Here is the deal.
Make sure the cam belt and the balance shaft belts have been done, and they need to be done every 30k or so. Check the coolant resivoir for oil residue. It isnt a sign of a blown headgasket, but it may be a sign of a leaking oil cooler. Also check area around the battery. It sits next to the windshield, passenger side. Under that sheet metal is the DME(computer) The early 944's were prone to leaking water in the tray area, due to the corrosion from the battery acid. 9/10 that is going to be one this one too. Check the frame around the rear hatch glass. See a gap? If that can be an expensive repair as the entire hatch needs to be removed and the frame resealed to the glass. Check for rust around the hatch catches.
While in the hatch area, pull away the carpet from the area where the taillights are. There should be a sticker with a bunch of 3 digit numbers on there. Those are the option codes. You will be able to pull them up online and figure out how the car was spec'd from the factory. I remember mine was spec'd with Konis, but the PO put Boge on the car. I also had the Fuchs from the 930, which was rare for the 944, 7.0 fronts and 8.0 rears. My car basically had every option that Porsche offered except power steering, that wasnt offered until 84.

PS. I had over 300k miles on my 944 when I wrecked it. Only regular maintenance was ever done. It is all about maintenance, and it will run up to 140+ with ease. Been there, done that.

Sounds like you will all be happy to know i passed on the 944, just couldn't do it, i love my miata and i couldnt justify trading it for something that i knew i wouldnt be able to afford WHEN it broke... so still got a miata in the bay. Thanks for all your input though
