Default GRM $2007 challenge Miata engine failure, anyone here?

In reading the GRM $2007 challenge, discovered one of the entries (with a turbo Miata) blew his engine on the way to the event.

Any of you? Curious about the details.

EDIT: Whoops, it was the $2006 challenge.

Ahh, thanks, found it!

"Phil finally got a chance to drop off his Miata off last night and the disection has commenced today. During the process of disconnecting and removing various bits to enable removal of the engine, I discovered several oddites. It, at one time, had some sort of engine management as there are taps for sensors in various places including but not limited to an EGT port, ECT tap, and BOV. Furthermore, the wiring harness is butchered and there are exposed crimp on connectors everywhere, ugh.

The most notable abnomaility was how far the timing was advanced. Looking at it's position, the CAS was advanced no less than 20*. In fact, it was modified to be advanced outside of the OE range."

That is AWESOME! If the motor's gunna go it might as well be spectacular. Nothing like power without tuning.

haha, i bet if he hung out here that wouldn't have happened. or maybe it would have happened a few months ealier :gay:

I was wondering the same thing about that car.....But goddamn do I need to consider entering the GSM challenge.....MS and a used greddy kit FTW.

BTW, this is a another reason you dont buy a used turbo miata, unless you know the work is good.

What a rookie! I had two holes in my block and a big one through my oil pan when I toasted mine. 16 psi and a 50 shot going down the local dragstrip. Close one side of the track for a half hour.

Why would someone go to a race competition and not check the timing on their car?

That would be half your budget and you still need the car. Scott Loercher entered a V8 conversion Miata back in '03.

yeah I've seen it, I've only subscribed to GRM for a few year :gay:

Not quite half the budget, but it's one easy cheap *** way to make tons of power.

weld a **** load of braces all over it, strip it, get some cheap *** falkens, paint it, and place in the top ten.

Yeah, the parts are still sitting in my garage if anyone wants them . They'd make a great paper weight. He purchsed the car with the timing advanced that far. It looked like the PO had some sort of managment in there some time before and removed it. Who knows why the timing was advanced so far.

The car is now en route to Turkey, heh.

Sounds like a plan to me! Keep your used greddy kit, go with a ghettocharger-esque ebay T3. Hmmmmmmmm
