Default Whats like a Miata, but not a Miata

I remember back in the day when i stumbled apon this site and the dredded M.net and was first introduced to what a Miata really had to offer, i had considdered other cars like an old corvet, camaro, or something of that nature.. I knew the end result i wanted was a light, rear wheel drive, short wheel base car that i could make fast, without putting myself 30k in debt doing so. Now being young and uneducated in what else is available in the wide world of automobiles, maybe some of you more educated people could fill me in.

What other cars are out there that meet these requirements..

Base car price for less than 6k
fairly light, or could be made so
short wheel base
rear wheel drive
decent availability of after market parts

I was actually looking at an 84-87 RWD Corolla, but then realized that the Miata provided everything that I was looking for in the Corolla, but with better parts support, and more availability. Plus, very few people know the advantages to Miatae.

toyota mr2, porsche 914, 944, boxter, 911, pontiac fiero (too heavy tho), s2000. Honestly, the only thing that is anything close to a miata is the porshe 944 and the honda s2000 that I can think of and i believe those are both heavier

there's nothing as cheap/sporty/small/light as a miata that i know of, esp. something that you can modify so cheaply

it's really pretty one-of-a-kind

My friend just unloaded a 944 because the parts to keep it on the road were killing him, and there aren't many junkyards with 944s to pick over if you need something like a control arm or diff. OEM part prices are scary as hell, I bet performance parts are, too. I think an older MR2 is probably the closest.

If gas prices stay higher, it might give some more car co.'s an incentive to build smaller and lighter - maybe even an RWD convertible!
