For the past 2 years I have been using a little tiny Acer Aspire One Notebook. I use it mostly for tuning purposes, and storgage of car videos, datalogs, /msq's. I shut it off this morning, I went to turn it back on tonight and the Windows XP startup screen shows up, then it goes into "Checking File System on C:
Then it goes through verifying files and folders, gets to 100%, and then it'll say error in writing output log. It'll either restart or go to a screen like asking me if I want to Start Windows Normally, or run 3 different versions of safe mode. If I choose safe mode, it'll write the following:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM 32\DRIVERS\***.sys
all over the screen

WTF is with this POS? I can't tune now, all I can do is be pissed off. Any suggestions of what to do aside from setting this 300 yards away from my AR-15?

hit f8 before windows shows while booting
may require trying a few times and or tapping it repeatedly

You will see what says Advanced menu
Select "disable auto restart on system failure"
Report back what the blue screen says
filename, error code, error number

I used the arrows to select "disable Auto Restart on system failure", blue screen says: Checking File system on C:

so what you mean is it goes to normal mode does a chkdsk, restarts, and does it over and over like that?

If you select safe mode what happens exactly, do you finally load up to the desktop?

After it completes the "verifying files and folders" at the screen that has Windows XP in the upper right corner...it'll say CONFIG_LIST_FAILED
Then there's a bunch of other stuff and the last paragraph is:
If problems continue, disable or remove and newly installed hardware of software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, then select safe mode.

If I select safe mode all that happens instantly is I get this all over the screen:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM 32\DRIVERS\many different words.sys

(it'll say ultra.sys, or perc2.sys, or hpn.sys, just basically every.sys file in the specified folder shows up...you get the idea)

I even selected "Last known good condition that worked" and nothing...

yes you should get that but you should also eventually load into windows desktop in safemode. I hope you aren't just restarting it because you see that on the screen.

Looks like a fun error related to registry issues. unless you have a bootable tool or can get into the orginal windows in safe mode, sol.

I guess it's JUNK. Any recommendations on a good cheap laptop I can use for tuning, wifi, downloads, etc?

I use a Samsung NB30. It's Samsungs rugged version of a netbook. Has free fall sensor for the hard disk, keyboard splash guard so it'll hopefully work if you spill your beer on it and also a rugged exterior.

I have no issues with it. Apart from on first time use you need to delete all the bloatware off it. Get the 160Gb version that runs on XP Version 3 and avoid the 250Gb version as that's on the shabby version of Windows 7 and is really slow in comparison.

I just picked up an old Pentium 3 dell laptop from Goodwill for 25$. Has a real serial port and I threw in a pcmcia wireless card and it works well for tuning.

Does that have the ssd in it? A reformat or for sure a new disk drive will fix. I'll buy it off you if you don't want to fix it.

^^ i was just gonna say same thing. good time to put a ssd in it. then no worries (and a 100x iops improvement to sweeten the deal)

It sure does have the SSD, but how do I reformat it if I can't even get it to start up or even give me a command prompt? I'd like to get some of the files off of it before anything.

sorry, not a windows user, so can't comment on that. for linux i boot a usb stick and then mount the internal disk. maybe u can do that for windows?

Usually you would boot from a USB stick, and format that way. Since you have a SSD drive I would be willing to bet the drive is trash. The older SSDs do not last much longer than 2 years. You will need to buy a replacement drive to fix it. (THe new SSDs last much much longer)

By booting off a different media.

Back when the EeePC came out, it was sort of the first of the "I have no CD-ROM drive" machines, and also the first really mass-market laptop you could buy with Linux preloaded (which, understandably, some folks purchased just to skip the MS license fee on) so there were a lot of tutorials written on how to boot one from a USB stick and install Windows without having access to an optical drive. Google it.

Your netbook is not junk. The operating system is screwed up. You can either unscrew it or reformat with a new operating system. It would be much easier if you had a Windows XP disc handy and an external USB drive. One free alternative is to make a a bootable Linux USB stick using a different computer. At least that would allow you to get into your computer and copy what you need to another USB stick.

Today I went to Best Buy and right now I am responding via my new Toshiba Laptop. Windows 7, 250GB HD, Celeron 900 @ 2.2 Ghz, 2 GB Ram, CD DVD-RW, etc.
All for the stupid low price of $349.99 after Geek Squad went through it and created backup disks and removed all that stupid pop up bullshit that new computers come with. I started this thing up and it was like starting up a computer that I've been using for weeks. The first downloads I pulled were Megalog Viewer and Tuner Studio. Looks like a good start to me!
