I work at a research lab on the college campus and I have a network account for the file server here at the lab that can be used whenever I am connected to the on-campus wireless.

I used it frequently on my old windows machine, but when trying in Ubuntu I get a different error every which way I try to get in. If I try to just type the server address into the network browser, I get something about nautilus, if I try to connect to a server then I get some error that changes depending on which type of server I try.

I don't know what kind of server it is, but I am pretty sure it runs WinXP. I have an email in to the IT guy but if I could figure this out before he gets here it would be nice... i feel like he won't want to bother getting me hooked onto it at all.

Anyway, I would imagine it's not too difficult I am just fairly new to Linux and don't know what I'm doing. I don't really even know where to ask this question, hence why I'm asking on a miata forum.

You cant type the computers network address into nautilus like that because they use different methodologies for networking. Linux to windows or reverse networking is not terribly simple, but its not too hard either.

You need to download, install, and configure Samba for it to work like you want.

Ok, I installed Samba, but it still doesn't work and I can't find any evidence that samba changed anything.

The Server should service client requests, not require a client to conform to their architecture. (Especially on a college campus...)

Well now I've got a new problem, completely unrelated to the old one.

When I try to play a .avi movie, VLC opens briefly and then closes, as does media player. When I try to open the file via terminal, I get the following errors:

If I google this, the solution seems to be modifying the xorg.conf file in some way, but everywhere I look mentions some different way, and none of the ones I tried appear to work for me. There's also something about halting and starting "X"?

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 600m, and I got it used and for free from my dad fairly recently so I don't actually know what's in it for hardware.

and this people is why *nix is still stuck in the ***** of the computer world.

I have no idea what that means but a part of me wants to tell you to remove vlc, recompile, and reinstall it.

But it does it in the other media player also, and a different file with the same extension plays just fine. I know it's not the video file because a few of the ones I have do it and other people don't have any trouble with them.

It's more than likely a codec issue then, if others are able to play that particular video, and you are able to play other videos.

I agree.

If a file with a similar extension plays then its codec related.

If they make Gspot for *nix it will make it easier to determine what codec you are missing.
