The boating industry is, and has been in a state of total chaos. Many companies have gone bankrupt and closed their doors. There are so many reposessed boats out there there is little demand for new product to be manufactured. Boat dealers who are still in business cannot get financing for new product if they need it. Some boat companies have re-purchase agreement which force them to buy back product which has not sold if a dealer goes out of business. A couple of years ago the banks where giving
everybody loans and now we are paying for it.
There are several boat companies in my area which have had massive layoffs or closed their doors. My wife and I both work for a local boat company and are very concerned for our future. It is a great company and has been very good to the both of us, but I am not sure how long that can last in this economy. Our company builds yachts in the 32' to 55' range.
Our company was over 800 people strong and building a combined total of over 16 boats a week at all three of our factories. Now we have closed 2 plants and are building less than one boat a week. Total employees is approximately 35. At least my wife and I are still working....for now.

My wife and I both work for the same company as well. I told myself a few years back we shouldn't put all of our eggs in one basket, and now I wish I had listened.
We aren't doing as bad as you guys, but getting pretty damn close, and I'm sure the higher ups are doing what they can to mask the situation. We used to get quarterly reports on how the company was doing, what was going up etc...and no one in the company has been clued in on anything for a year and a half.
We had a very similar layoff (set of layoffs really) last year, a small one the week before thanksgiving, and a big one the week before Christmas. What a bunch of *******. Needless to say we didn't have a Christmas party and no one got Kroger gift cards or company hoodies like we usually do.
My favorite part was when they layed off my boss last month (full time experienced industrial engineer that just finished three BIG projects for the company), and then asked me to take a year off from school to do his job. I couldn't even believe they let him go...and they didn't even offer me any kind of pay bump, salary or tuition reimbursement to boot. Yep, you bet your *** I'm going to take $80K/yr responsibility for $15/hr while setting graduation further back after I just saw what you did to the best boss I've ever had. Dumbasses.
It's easy to say "let the weak companies die," but it's very hard to watch it happen when you know there are many good employees, all subject to the poor decisions of crappy management. I could go on all day about HUGE fuckups they've made that have cost the company MILLIONS, but they're too busy getting onto people for taking their state-mandated 15min breaks.
