Going to the DMV without an appointment is like drinking until I black out.

Every time I do it, its ******* miserable, a waste of a day, and I tell myself I'll never do it again. And it seems I never learn

Seriously why would you??? Oi. I wish DMVs around here had appointments. I loved walking past all those suckers waiting in the non-appointment line. It's like... legally cutting in line.

Just retitled and registered the Sequoia this morning. I was in and out in under 30 minutes with no appointment. This particular location is always like this.

We can register online for up to 2 years at a time. Did 3 cars a month ago. 10 minutes max and they send reminder automatically.

Sticker arrives within 1 week.

After you get the first registration done at the DMV, every one thereafter forever can be renewed online. They even send the metal tags in the mail if necessary when you renew.

F#*K DMV!
I always just use my local AAA office. They're authorized to do most DMV functions besides drivers license stuff. No appointments necessary. Most times it's totally empty; the worst I've ever seen it was just a single person in line in front of me. Worth the cost of membership alone.

They revamped the DMV around here a couple of years back. Every time I go in, I marvel at how fast and efficient they are. If it weren't for the stupid forms the state makes them use, it would be no more arduous than getting groceries.

This was my experience with the Manhattan DMV on W. 31st street as well. Both times I've been there (once for out-of-state title transfer and registration, once for license), I made an appointment online, printed both the forms I'd need and an appointment slip with a barcode, arrived at the location and scanned the barcode at the kiosk which then printed a ticket with a number and instructions which told me which station (of roughly 50) to wait at, waited maybe 10 minutes for my number to be announced both aurally and on the Big Board, went up to the counter, and made my transaction with zero fuss.

I did find that a number of people there seemed to be expressing confusion and consternation at their own ability to prepare in advance and follow plainly stated directions once at the location, however the system can hardly be faulted for this. They'd suffer the same indignity while ordering a bagel in the morning at the local deli. Heck, the first time I went there (for title transfer) there was a snafu with my insurance form, but the lady behind the counter gave me clear instructions and a fax number to have Geico send a corrected report to, and even that was resolved painlessly in less than 30 minutes.

I think that a lot of people go into the DMV process with a confrontational attitude and predisposed to dissatisfaction based on stereotypical portrayals of the system as a whole. This is a recipe for failure.

So I found out that it will cost me an additional $36 to add a Miata to my current 6 month policy.

Not $36/month. $36 total. Turning 25 is pretty sweet.

You don't live in Wayne county. With the highest number uninsured drivers in the country.

But I do live in Florida. Specifically, the Sarasota/Tampa area. Retirement and snowbird capital.
