How (and why) to Ramble on your goat sideways
That's what happens when you play around on xda, no idea why so many people trust running stuff they find on that site. Flash it back to stock rom and OTA update, or spend hours on xda flashing more random **** hoping it works.
The error you got is from missing gapps. Custom roms don't come with gapps and you can flash the wrong ones, or in the wrong order. Or, you might just be so lucky as to be locked out by poor coding on your end and a google server update breaking compatibility.
**** that ****, it screws me every time and always at the absolute worst possible time.

Yeah, but I need Google I/O to happen so I can figure out what devices I want to buy. If there is no next revision of the 5" form factor phone I will self harm if I can't get my hands on a 5X. By that same token, if they discontinue the 9" tablet and DO NOT bring back the 7" tablet, I'm going to again kick myself for not buying the current Nexus9. I want a 7" but I'll settle for a 9" because screw 10"+ tablet devices. I'm got a Samsung Galaxy NotePro 12.2" tablet sitting in my desk. Nobody wants it because its just obscene.
The OnePlus X is the only other thing that is on my radar right now. It runs OxygenOS (Android 5.1.1 based) and its about the closest thing you are going to find to straight up naked Android, plus it has an SD card slot. The $250 price point is fairly tempting.
Weren't you the one on Facespace who was pushing me to get a 5X?

I was getting an error saying com.google.somethingsomething.gapps was crashing.
Flashing back to stock isn't something I want to do I rooted 4.4.2 so I could use a haxx0r'd pandora with unlimited skips & no ads.
I also could update it Any idea if I'll loose my root access?
If you tried going on xda and flashed the gapps package over and they're still crashing then I'd imagine going back to stock is the only solution.
I don't know on root, they're all different. If I remember right my last phone would root on the stock rom and stay that way through updates. It was a nexus device though, so they made it kinda easy.

meh,
I'm still on kit kat, going to upgrade to marshmallow or w/e is the latest and see if that fixes it.
It's affecting a lot of apps I use; don't have time that nonsense. I'll just wait and reroot, reinstall pandora apk

Why not Moto? I love my Moto X Pure Edition. Used to be on the Nexus train but now I am very happy with Moto. Nearly stock build with some very useful Moto tweaks.

Ah yes, that. I desperately wanted to get my wife on a 5X & Fi but she resisted. She really loves that damn Nokia 301.2 I bought her a couple years ago. Being a Nokia candybar phone its never going to die :(
Lag? Like, in the interface?

Yes, lag in the interface. My buddy wrote about it on his tech blog -- "Why you shouldn't buy a Nexus 5X"
