Fwiw I was diagnosed over 15 years ago. My parents spent a lot of time working with me, counselors, the school, etc. When I was younger I was so difficult that it actually was a serious issue in school. I distracted other kids, and caused lots of problems. We tried a lot of things, but when I started medication it changed my life.

My daughter (currently 10) has ADHD, the difference between on-medication and not is night and day. She literally (and I mean that in the actual, literal sense of the word "literal") can't sit still for more than a minute or two without wiggling something.

I'm like that even on medication. I'm a non-functional person when I am off of it.

My 3rd grade teacher wanted me to stay off of it. Said he would personally work with me. About a month into 3rd grade I had to go on it. I was too disruptive to the other students.

It sucks, because nowadays, and in college, having ADD/ADHD is "normal" everyone has a prescription to adderall and to a lot of people it looks like I just use it to get good grades. Nope, I use it so I can function.

I don't have any doubts that without my parents help, and starting medication I would not have made it through school, or ended up where I am now. The impulsive tendencies that go along with ADHD can really **** you over in your teens/early 20s.

The way I like to explain it is this. You know the angel and the devil that sit on your shoulder and tell you when something is a bad idea. Well mine either don't exist, or are both devils. We used to call it my "pause" medicine, because it would give me a split second longer to try and make a decision.

Its all weird, and not very scientific. Which sucks.

It is just one part of a complete diagnosis. You may have some similarities to someone with ADHD.

The biggest impact of it is the delayed development of certain parts of the brain. Specifically those related to judgment and focus.

Actually its similar to the portions of your brain that are slowed down by alcohol.

When I had ADD bad growing up, I remember my mind was always racing about whatever my interest was at the time. Was never interested in school, always was doing computers, programming, html, photoshop, video games in my free time. Took adderall up till senior year in high school when I decided against it. I miss having ADD now? Feels like my mind has calmed down since I've gotten older. Lethargic.

Jesus Aidan, you are right, you are just a younger version of me.

I didn't have the benefit of Adderall OR a solid diagnosis due to older psychologist I visited who was probably still using a copy of the DSM from 1968.

I was diagnosed with everything from learning disabilities to at one point someone suggested schizophrenia (but not an actual diagnosis) and somewhere my mom has a list of behavioral meds a mile long that I'm pretty sure is a result of the doctors just taking shots in the dark. Some of it was ridiculously heavy ****, like limited production go drive to San Jose because that's the closest pharmacy that can carry it and register this with the Feds type drugs. I spent 1.5 years in highschool drooling like a zombie when I should have been studying and making social connections thanks to some of the pills they had me taking. Eventually someone figured out it was probably ADD/ADHD but my that time I was out of school, my parents marriage had broken up and no one cared any more because I was an adult and I could fend for myself. (That sounds harsher than I intended.)

Which is why I don't often talk about it, because in the last decade its become the diagnosis du jour. If I had a legitimate diagnosis AND there had been drugs to treat it, I probably could have had a shot at college.

But your description is good, I like it very much. I've often thought about getting myself tested as an adult, but things being like they are these days I'm not sure it would end up being a legitimate diagnosis or not. Hell, reading either of my build threads is probably enough for a diagnosis

$55 for a Clarion Bluetooth/Aux In/USB car stereo receiver. Best price I've seen on a well-reviewed mech-less receiver from a decent name brand. Everything below this price is the Boss/Pyle/random Chinese stuff with lots of bad reviews. Also nice that it's fairly plain and doesn't look like a Transformer's face.

I ordered the last 2 that were in stock at that price, but as of now you can still order and it's supposed to ship in 1 to 3 weeks.

Just a few days ago, I was on Crutchfield looking at BT / SD-only head units.

You know that field on the left where you click boxes to filter down to certain brands? The words "Clarion" and "Decent name brand" didn't cross in my mind.

Also not a brand I would have been looking at normally. But as long as the thing works, I'm not too concerned about audio fidelity in a Miata (and I listen to more podcasts than music in the car, anyway). For $55 I couldn't pass it up. The Pioneer I had been planning on previously is $20 more.

EDIT:

I should add that I was more than ready to drop $30 on one of those Boss/Pyle/China-specials to put in the 1994 Miata before I sell it, but was scared off by the numerous reviews complaining that Bluetooth worked only intermittently, or the receiver had pervasive static across all inputs, or the unit just completely died after 3 weeks. I'm hoping that moving up to a Clarion unit that sold for $90 originally should at least get me something that will work reliably for a few years. I bought 2 so that I'll have one ready for the next Miata.

I really like this thing, works great 99.9% of the time. The times it doesn't work are due to me power cycling it with restarts, then it just takes a minute or two to reboot.

Clarions would pop, all others I repaired were generally in dash 6 changers that ate ****, from labels or optical motion sensors failing. There were quite a few marine units from boats, too. Most all were OEM, but not all.

Funny enough, I got the job when I repaired my Dad's then girlfriend's 10AE's 6 changer. It worked, then died again. My dad took the car up to longwood, and I got a phone call with a job offer a few hours later. Somehow or another I borrowed that car for a few weeks as a Junior in high school driving to work and everywhere else in the middle, was a ******* riot and largely why I have a miata now.

I know medication is a real necessity for some people, but it seems like it's too often used as a way for parents to avoid... parenting.

I totally know what you mean. But my parents did everything and if you met them you would believe it. I did months of counseling. They were at school every week meeting with teachers. Etc etc. List goes on. Before medicine I would get sent to the principal's office like 7 times a week.
