If $800 is the lowest price you have seen for a hardtop in your area in 1.5 years, then it would appear that local market forces dictate that the value of this hardtop is $800.

No, you misunderstood. I said that it seems to work properly now, not that it crashed backwards into a telephone pole and is now totaled.

I unfortunately know that... Doesnt make me want to pay that much for one any more than I did prior.

I wonder if maybe it really is the fuel system...

We know for a fact that my fueling went a tad lean about a week ago, since the car started pinging at high load. I re-scaled the VE table, and that fixed it.

Now, I've got an intermittent "idles poorly, requires much more injector duration than usual at idle, and has no low-end torque" problem.

And yet it runs (ran?) just fine at high RPM and high load. A fuel system problem would get worse, not better, as load increases.

Wouldn't it?

I think YOU misunderstood.

You will keep having this problem. You won't be able to find the source. It'll haunt you until you weep. It'll come back just as soon as you forget it even existed.

It tasks me. It tasks me and I shall have it!

I'll chase this problem 'round the moons of Nibia and through the Antares Maelstrom and 'round Perdition's flames before I give it up!

Stupid question: have you changed the fuel filter?

Not a stupid question at all, and no, I have not.

I suspected the fuel filter last weekend, when the mixture started going lean and I was getting some knock at high load. At that time, I did not experience any symptoms at low load, and all logged parameters were perfectly normal at idle.

After bumping the VE table, operation appeared entirely normal for several days. Then symptom #2 hit, which was a sudden onset torquelessness at low RPM, and highly abormal logged data at idle. However, the vehicle did not experience any difficulties at higher RPM (including WOT), nor was the fuel mixture lean at any point.

I have a replacement fuel filter sitting here on my workbench, along with a fuel pressure gauge and a complete timing-belt kit. They're all going on.

Joe have you checked the engine coolant temperature sensor and its connections. If it thinks its overheating sporadically it should go way rich or limp mode temporarily. Just something to check. Code po171 system too lean
Code po172 system to rich.

This is a 1990 with an MS3. Pretty sure it's not throwing any OBD-II codes.

The datalogs, however, show normal readings from all sensors.

Going back through some history, they also show that I've been experiencing higher-than-normal MAP at idle for a while now, even though I hadn't noticed any obvious symptoms.

Joe, do you still have a cat in your car?

As in, a rolling chunk of cat guts intermittently blocking flow.
I mean, you said high MAP readings.
