I've used the service a few times over the past six months, and for my specific needs, its great. I am exactly the target audience for Zipcar; a car-less city dweller who needs a private automobile on an occasional basis for short durations, such as to carry something which won't fit onto a bicycle home from a store, or to make a brief visit to a distant location not easily reachable by public transit.

For these purposes, I love it. There are four cars stationed in the parking garage adjacent to my building, and about a dozen more scattered around a half-km radius from here. It's rare that I actually need a car, but when I do, Zipcar is vastly more convenient than a taxi or a traditional rental car.

That said, bear in mind that they do charge by the hour. This system is designed for people who need the car for 2-3 hours, not 2-3 days. So not only will a traditional rental car be cost-competitive for a multi-day reservation, but it can be very difficult to find a Zipcar that's actually available for several days at a time. People routinely pre-book small blocks several weeks in advance, so unless you're that far ahead of them, you'll find it difficult to find one single car that's free for a whole weekend, without having had at least an hour or two reserved here and there.

That's another thing that distinguishes Zipcar from most other rental services- when you reserve a block of time, you are reserving one specific car, by name. So, let's assume that at your location there are three cars, named Alice, Belinda and Cathy. And say that we need to book a car for a whole weekend (Friday at 6p through Sunday at 10p).

Next weekend is out. All three cars have multiple reservations on them already.

The weekend after that is out, too. People have already pre-booked several slots on each car.

Thre weeks out is looking better, but unfortunately no one single car is available all three days. Someone has booked Alice on Friday from 8p-10p, Belinda is booked on Sunday from 9a-12p, and Cathy is reserved on Saturday from 4p-5:30p.

That's the aggrivation. With a traditional managed rental service, they'd just shuffle the reservations such that all three shift to Alice, freeing up Belinda and Cathy for all-weekend resevrations. But with Zipcar, that can't happen. If I book Mary Loufor next August 12th from 6p-10p, I have blocked out that one specific Mazda 3 for myself.

Sidebar:

Had to stay home this weekend. Specifically, sorting on the sofa right now, getting paid to watch television at 2am, while we run tests on our new transmitter.

This is the first episode of "Mr. Box Office" I've ever seen, and I can say only this- this is quite possibly the worst sitcom in the history of man. Ever day I find new ways to be embarrassed and ashamed by the programming on my station.

Merlin crap was AT&T. Garbage, and even more useless these days. I spent a few years as a PBX Project Manager doing them. Sucky job.

They are damn near the same thing to me and both receive my hate, along with Ska music, many Italians and hippies. And liberals. That being said the trilby is worse.

I am an old man and I will yell at you to get off my damn lawn. I have been drinking and I have to get up at 0545.

WTF does "All merchandise discarded" mean?

Back to the Fedora thing... I had a legit oldschool Fedora I got from some old dude at a church rummage sale or something back in like 99 or 2000 or so. That thing was superdope, I wore it out to bars and such all the time. I guess I'm just a Fedora hipster. I certainly don't wear it anymore.

My guess is it means he better have had insurance, or they will only offer the minimum package value for the complete loss of contents.

On the one hand, I pretty much agree with her.

On the other hand, I have great difficulty taking serious the advice of, or accepting as completely normal, any person who would do... that to their own body.

While I appreciate a shapely female chest as much as the next heterosexual male with a pulse, I am utterly stymied attempting to understand the kind of mental / psychological dysfunction that would either cause a person to genuinely find comically artificial breasts attractive, or to believe that others would do the same.
