time for a new car....volvo?
i'm finally getting tired of driving my old 92 around in this heat, so i'm thinking about a new car and on the verge of signing the deal. I was looking at those new Volvo C30 coming out in October. Any opinions? Now i'm just debating whether to keep my miata or sell it.

My friend just bought an '88 Volvo 740 (turbo 2.3L) that is a blast to drive (mostly because it does some pretty awesome burnouts on its 185s). This particular one is in rough shape, but we're gonna up the boost and beat it up some more. He actually autocrossed it yesterday and got lots of cheers for getting sideways all time time. Fun car.

Do you honestly think AWD makes it safer? If anything that makes it more dangerous because of that thought process. I've seen so many Subaru's and Evo's trashed because the douche behind the wheel thought AWD was going to save their bacon. I personally know two of them that have totalled their WRX's and one other person who was killed for that folly.
As for $30k spent? What are you looking for? Something practical? Something sporty? A project car? If I was throwing $30K at a car right now I'd be getting a 350z. If I had to get something practical, probably a BMW 1 series, like the new 135i (I think the designation is) that uses the same twin turbo inline six as the 3 series does. Or the Lexus IS250... or a base Infiniti G35 sedan. If you're concerned about mileage, then a Toyote or Honda 4 cylinder is your only recourse.

wait a few months and score a 05 or so G35 coupe for mid-low 20s, put the rest in a mutual fund
but, bear in mind that the person writing this post doesn't own anything newer than 2001 and likes it that way...

Sarcasim is lost over the internet. I never said AWD was actually safer...that's just what you tell people who think it is. I mean, I wouldn't throw into a corner expecting AWD to save me...but I wouldn't mind it at all when the snow season comes around.
I don't think you can really beat the kind of performance and practicallity you get out of an Evo or STi for 30k.

Don't spend money on a NEW Volvo. They don't hold resale value for ****. Where do you live? Last week I saw a late 90's Volvo T5R with low miles for sale on Craigslist (don't remember where).
I really wish Volvo would suck it up and just make a performance car. IPT does some stuff to give'em a little more oomph, but it's really not enough. I totally dig the old rear-drive bricks that dudes drop in V8's to... and there are some european Volvo's out there that are MarkP-style turborrific!
Volvo shold make a rear-drive S40 w/about 300hp and 6-spd... and make it in a wagon... my dream car.

most dealers gouge the **** out of the STI's and Evo's nowadays.
I don't even have a Mitsubishi dealership in my town anymore, they sold that poorly.

the c30 i'm looking at is a 5 cylinder turbo charged engine. its about 220hp stock and runs 0-60 in about 6 seconds. smallest volvo ever. 2 door and strictly 4 seat (two bucket seats in the back rather than a bench). i'm a little nervous about audi cause i've seen a lot of electricals go bad in them. i want something sporty but fun so toyota and honda r out of the equation. do they 1series bmw's sell in US yet? i haven't heard much about those.....hmmm, google time
