I thought hustler was just talking about the freewheel portion of the rear hub. They are replaceable, but usually not interchangeable between brands. It can be tricky/impossible to find a replacement for inexpensive hubs.



I think it's just their ratchet design...

I'm tired of waiting.

It's still 0 degrees Celsius out in the mornings. Going to layer up a bit and start commuting with the bike.

Hope to get 3-4 days a week in commuting on the bike, but not if it's miserable and raining.

^^^ that frustrates me. If you are going to be a fixie boss- just ride no brakes. If you want function- put on two brakes. I hate the front brake only fixie.

I usually don't hate front brake only fixie... but the fact that he has 2 levers on there (presumably to ride the hoods) makes it annoying.

Just got into mountain biking finally at the end of last year and love it. I picked up a used Cannondale Jekyll 500. 2003 Cannondale Jekyll 500 - BikePedia
Mainly do cross country-ish riding with occasional fast paced lengthier downhill thrown in.
This bike is getting pretty worn out and I feel like I want to upgrade or just switch bikes to something different.. I'm just not sure exactly what I want. I'm thinking of switching to a hardtail with a better fork up front and maybe going up a tire size... 27.5, 29er? I'm only 5'9, would a 29er with say a 17in frame fit me decently?
Also gearing... do you guys have a prefrence.. I'm liking the idea of a 2x10 or maybe even a 1x10. Would a 1x10 be too hard to handle? I'm in decent shape (ride probably 2-3 times a week, I'd say about 30-40 miles a week)

I don't want the bike to be super expensive, and I'm not opposed to a used rig at all.
$900-1000 is about the limit.

go 2x10. I have a converted 1x8 and it both doesn't have enough up top and really doesn't have enough down low (built pre massive low end cog era). the front derailleur will also help keep your chain on LOL.


As far as size, figure out the geometry your looking for:

BB ground clearance
Standover height
saddle height
Reach


Then there are some other geometry features that should be addressed for the type of fork/riding you have (headtube angle)

Once you determine if your frame or another best suits those things you can build that up. wheel size is a debate. if you can get the right frame sizing with the wheels fitting then you can only decide for yourself. I haven't ridden a 29" tire bike, but I understand the idea of why it would be desirable.
