UPS shipping woes

UPS shipping woes
Heres the backstory:
I had sold a set of wheels to someone in Canada back in April. Since they were pretty high dollar, I declared a value of $1800 on them (they were 18" Works, and the value was within $100 of what I sold it for). If something were to happen, I wanted to be covered. Also included in there were a 20 pc set of Work locking lugs and lug nuts. In one of the boxes, I included the lug nuts which were in their own packaging (i.e., not loose).
Anyways, between MA and Toronto, most of the lug nuts went missing (I think 14 or 16). Since the lug nuts/locks are like $150 or so brand new, I filed a claim. I've run into a shitload of issues since then. One issue i have is someone saying that declared value isnt insurance, yet UPS still acts like it is insurance and gladly takes my money for it. I got through to another person and they deny the claim instantly for some other reason that I cant remember. I have to call and fight to get someone who wasnt an inbred redneck to explain the situation. She approves the claim, and then a couple weeks later I get a call from some moron from the company that processes UPS's claims. This guy is a real piece of work. I argue with him, he initially rejects the claim saying I have to prove how the items went missing. Unless I'm sitting inside the box for the entire journey, I couldnt tell you that. He initially rejects it, I talk to his even stupider supervisor (edit: more stupid, lol), but for whatever reason he calls me up a week later and says its been approved. They send a claim form for me to fill out (basically showing how much the item is and how I want to get reimbursed, etc).
I sent that form in a few weeks ago and I get a call this morning by some lady who said shes with UPS. She says she cant find any proof of the declared value so she can only do $100 + the cost of shipping
I was driving to work but I was arguing to her until I went through an area with bad reception and dropped the call lol. Anyways, she said I can provide a receipt showing the declared value. The problem is, I have no idea where that receipt is. What options do I have? I'd call until I can get someone who isnt a moron but I dont have time for that (I had the summer off so I had plenty of time to argue with them). Can I go to the UPS distribution center, where I initially shipped out the wheels, to see if they could pull that initial shipping info? I have the online receipt but they dont show declared value on them.
This is really frustrating for many reasons: first, that the kid who bought my stuff is out parts and I've been trying frantically to correct this. second, its taken this long to get to the claim reimbursement. third, that everytime I talk to someone, they have no idea what the **** is going on. I thank god that it was just lug nuts that went missing and not the actual wheels. If the last UPS person I talked to isnt bullshitting me, worst case scenario, I'm out like $50 to cover up the difference of what they wont claim. I was told by someone at the UPS store by my house that if there is ever a claim issue they handle it. I think I will just start shipping out that way instead of directly through the distribution center. I've never had to file a UPS claim before, and this has been absolutely atrocious. Whether the UPS store costs more is almost worth it so I dont have to deal with this again.
What are your guys thoughts? Btw sorry for the long novel, just had to rant about it.
cliffnotes: declared a set of wheels and lug nuts for $1800, lug nuts go missing, UPS drags its *** to approve my claim, then cant find proof that I declared it for $1800.

I feel your UPS pain. As a buyer I got the same run around for a $250 claim. UPS actually sent a driver out to retrieve the item in the original box. I copied all the paper work. Then tried to follow up and the person I spoke with said there was no record of my claim number. Both the seller and I pursued the claim and both got endless run arounds. After six months and too much time wasted I gave up. The seller and I agreed to split the loss and that was the end of it. I don't ship UPS.

I feel your pain for both the buyer and seller.
It seems there are problem whenever I get something from UPS going across the border. Rafa just sent me his ECU and someone at Canada Customs/UPS took out 2 screws and pried open the inside cover of the unit to see what was inside. On top of that I had to pay taxes on the declared value. That would suck for 1800 wheels.
Hope it gets resolved.

Chances are the boxes WERE opened going across the border...while they were open some lugnuts fell out and they were retaped shut.
No way of proving it of course...but thats why there is insurance on them...Now that I think of it, my problem was with FedEx not UPS (they're both evil though)

label, like shipping label? I shipped it directly through the local UPS distribution center.
