I have an android phone. When they first came out I was like "HOLY ****! LINUX ON A PHONE!" and immediately wanted one. I bought a Galaxy S and went on my merry way.
After a few months though, I'm left with mixed feelings due to my relationship with android phones at work and my own problems with it.
ps. One final note: If your 'project' involves writing an app for money, I encourage you to read the interview with the guy who was in charge of "Angry Birds" development. Especially the part where he talks about his feelings on pay-for apps for android. It is the best selling mobile app of all time IIRC and he made an assload of money on the Iphone/Ipad/Etc. They chose to give it away free on android.

As for angry birds, make sure you tell the whole story. Ads pay more than game sales is the bottom line with respect to their decision. They make 1 million per month in ad revenue alone...

The project I'm going to work on is a basic concept which I'll be relying on ad revenue and probably give the app away for free. So its nice to hear that ads can pay off just as much as the app itself, if not more.

pay-apps only attract a very small market compared to ad-supported apps - with a pay-app, you have to decide if you like the app BEFORE you try it.
That being said, I wish rovio offered a pay / registered version of angry birds, because now that I know I enjoy it, I wish I could get rid of those annoying ads.
Newbsauce: Is your OS ad supported? That's fucked up to me.

The MyTouch 3G (and 3G Slide, and probably the others in that family as well) only have 512k internal, but they are supposed to come with a microSD card. If she got hers used / refurbed / stolen, it's possible that she didn't know this. You have to pop the battery cover off to access it, but there's a little slot on the side where the card goes. You can get 'em fairly cheap, too. $18 for an 8 GB card at Frys.

Can't really complain about that. It's a good model.

I too had a Bold and half the time I used it, I had that stupid ******* clock spinning in the middle of the screen. I now have a Tour and it's a bit better but it may as well be from a time machine straight out of 2005 because it is still slow as ****, has crap apps, and a cludgy OS. RIM sucks.

Step 1: Choose your favorite carrier
Step 2: Buy a Galaxy S phone for that carrier
I've had Blackberry's for 4 years starting with the 8300 up to the 9000. When the time came to choose, the Torch just didn't stand up to the new offerings from Apple and Android.
I'm grandfathered in on the unlimited data plan under ATT, so I got the Samsung Captivate.
Basically, Galaxy S is win. If I could choose my carrier, I would have the Sprint Epic 4G due to the slide out keyboard and camera flash.
Right now I'm using it as a wifi access point, watching youtube videos.
Android is a great option if you like to fiddle with things. Last night I flashed a modem file for the Bell Vibrant. It allows HSUPA data speeds that ATT reserves only for the Iphone 4. I now have 3.5mbps down and 1.5mbps up speed. I've never had any problem with the phone shutting down when going to sleep. I've only needed to plug it into the computer once when it failed to flash a rom. Everything else can be done via wifi. Currently running Cognition Rom 2.2b8.

Not to spark an argument, but the galaxy S is one of the best platforms out there once you install a custom ROM. It's well known that the Android 2.1 (and now 2.2) that samsung provides is a piece of ****. It takes about 5 minutes so I'd recommend nero V5. Here are my benchmarks on stock Nero w/ no overclocking:

If I get an android will I have to **** around with stupid technical bullshit problems? I want my phone to be my ******* daily driver. No problems, no tuning involved, no workarounds, just dial, surf web, waste time on games, and send email with NO PROBLEMS. I can tech it up on computers but i have no desire to do so with my phone/pda/whatever APPLIANCE

Sometimes the damn thing will ring and ring, and will not answer no matter how many times I hit the send button. A few times it would never hang up when I was leaving a voice mail. I had to pull the battery to end the call. It also is constantly ghost dialing (one day, that is going to get me in trouble).
Another thing, and maybe this probably relates to all smart phone, but it is not easy to make a phone call when you are driving. It seems like you have to go through so many hoops to do anything with it. It is down right dangerous.
I have the Samsung Moment by the way. I here there is software that will correct some of the problems.

A: Phone does things you dont want it to
B: Phone doesn't detect you're touching the screen

phones built within the last 2 years dont need screen protectors. i laugh when I see scratched up hazy bullshit stick-on crap on people's iphone4 or new android phone.
the screens are durable like whoa. I can scratch mine with a key all day long without showing marks.

What is the point of putting your smartphone in a protective case??? The case then gets all nastifucked and then three years later when it's time for a new phone, your old phone is still all sparkling and perfect. And you'll have lugged around some stupid case for three years. Blah

Gorilla glass FTW.
Google has been lying to me. A search for "Cognition Rom" shows that the latest version was released in December, when in fact it was a few days ago. Apparently there's a new thread on XDA for version 3.04. I feel like I've been living under a rock now. The new version is so much incredibly faster that it's like a new phone.
