My wife and I are quasi bed shopping. Our current bed is a cheap tempurpedic knock-off which is a humongous POS. Both of us wake up with back pain and generally un-rested. My wife has been begging for a new bed for a while, and I sort of jokingly promised her if I won the runoffs I would use some of the money on a bed. Well, now I have to pay out on that promise.

So...I don't really know anything about beds. Up to our current bed, I've always had cheap-ish Serta mattresses and box springs. That's about all the experience I have. That, and I've never really bought a bed. I don't have the first idea of where to look, how to get the best deal, etc. etc.

What do you guys have? What would you recommend? Where's the best place to buy and what's the best way to get a good deal.

Any advice you can give is much appreciated. I'm really hoping to avoid spending $$$$ on a bed and then not liking it...

that is what I have if you dig memory foam, we got our from a local overstock place, they dont come with a warranty at that price but if you replace it in 3-4 years at that price its worth it. the wife and I like it but it takes some getting used to as sleeping on foam you lay different then a spring mattress. also get the box spring with it, its metal so it doesn't flex

I'll tell you what I do. I'm sure others will disagree.

First, set a spending limit. You can buy beds for incredible prices these days. As in, many thousands of dollars. So, figure out that you want to spend, and use that as a guide. It's not absolute, but the salesman needs a starting point. Figure on at least $600 for a queen.

Go to a bedding place, tell them the size you want and try a bunch. Do not try the $3500 ones unless you plan to spend that much, or it will color your decision. Like driving a new Lotus when all you can afford is a Kia. So, after you try some, tell the guy what you liked or not about it. They can't decide which ones are comfortable to you, so they need feedback to help you choose.

Bedding, like furniture, has incredible, insane markups. As a result, they have a LOT of room to move on prices. Demand free delivery, free removal of old bed and free frame as a mimimum. If they won't offer that upfront, go to another store. Matress manufacturers also have a huge number of models, and they don't all carry them all, so it is very hard to compare prices across diferent stores. They do this on purpose.

Find one that is comfortable. If it sucks after one night, you need a store with a good exchange policy. You'll just have to shop around for that.

I, personally, hate those memory foam types, so I can give no constructive advice on them.

Funny you make this thread now: your situation is almost exactly what we were in.

We slept on a tempurpedic knockoff like you for about 5 years. 1st 2 years or so it was great. Then it got progressively worse.

Just bought a new mattress before christmas.

It is NICE. It retailed at $3700, and because the local SleepTrain was having a clearance to make room for new models, we got it for $1750. Then added memory foam pillows, fancy blankets/protecters/etc. All said and done 2350 otd.

I'll tell you this: DO NOT cheap out on a mattress. I dont care what any cheap bastard in here tells you. Its something you use EVERY DAY, and your body/health/feeling every day depends on it.

One thing to remember above all else, there is no "This mattress is better than that one because of xxxxxxxxxx", because there is ZERO factual evidence of anything because it's all personal preference.

Pick out the bed that feels best to you. If its a $200 bed, so be it, same for a $2000 bed. Salesmen love to throw around a bunch of BS jargon that means nothing because beds are all personal preference.

Warranties are a joke on beds, so don't let that sway your opinion either thinking you would be getting a higher quality bed because it has a better warranty. If you read the fine print, it would have to spontaneously combust for the manufacturer to warranty it. We had a super high dollar Simmons that had body impressions after 5 years (with a 25 year warranty) to the point where you sunk into the bed and was extremely uncomfortable.

Come to find the warranty only covers divots that are a minimum of 1.5" below the top of the mattress, which if you lay a ruler across the top of the mattress, even the worst mattress won't have that much of an impressions with no weight on it.

My wife and I ended up buying a memory foam/gel topper mattress straight from Costco. Was very comparable to the tempurpedic we liked and it cost $700 for a King.

My advice would be buy from a store that offers a 1 year free exchange/return policy. Mattress Firm here in Dallas has this, which is great for anyone who is unsure whether or not the mattress they bought turns out to be any good (especially if you're converting to memory foam).

Well here is your problem.. you have a dude wearing a tank top with pig tails in ur bed... or a chick with a man face.


Anyways so far my fav was a slab of 8" thick memory foam with nothing else on top of it. Just the memory foam and the sheets. At first i bought it and couldnt get the box spring so i only took the memory foam and slept on that with it on the floor. Eventually the seller brought me the box spring which i didnt like. Now my bed is sitting on 8 of those structural white bricks with wooden boards on top of it (ya know to give me some more room to hide car parts under my bed). The store i went to had "soft medium and hard" available, i went with med but now i wish i had gone with hard memory foam. 2.0 or whatever number they called it.

Exactly my point, the wife and I love the mattress. Its a good brand with good reviews and for the price we get a spanking new mattress every 4 years.

The Savvyrest that Y8S linked looks interesting/nice but out of my price range. We have about $2000 to spend and that's for a king size. I don't actually want to spend $2000 on a bed, I'd much rather spend $600 and spend the other $1400 on an EFR turbo but the last time we cheaped out on a bed we got stuck with the horrible POS we have now...

Memory foam causes major back issues for some.

I have a beautyrest black, myself. Find the one that suits you.

Bed is the most comfortable thing ever felt for both people who like soft and hard beds. Entirely worth it.

Picked it up for 1500$ at a liquidation store.

Edit: Spend the 2k on the bed. Everyone who sleeps in it, including you, will be happier for it. A turbo is not worth a good night's sleep.

I spend a third of my life in my bed, therefore i was willing to spend good money to have a great bed. What I have is a "tempurpedic knockoff", but it's one hell of a quality knockoff. Picked it up from a company called "bergad isoform", their manufacturing facility is near Pittsburgh, and unfortunately they do exclusively internet/phone sales, so you can't lay on it before you buy it. They do have a 90 night trial period though, and free shipping and "install" . I picked up the top of the line king mattress from them for 1600. When I called them to find out more and told them I needed a week to make a purchasing decision, they said that they could offer me the top of the line bed at the next lower quality bed price. That was awesome. It's either a 20 or 25 year warranty on the bed also. The bergad beds are often rated higher than the tempurpedic equivalents, and they can price then much lower because they do no advertising. Most of their sales are word-of-mouth. About once a month my girl will wake up and ask me " why is your bed so comfortable?" And I usually answer "because you got the dick last night"
