Really? I guess I probably didn't know that before we had kids...
On the topic of c-sections, it's hard to believe these days, but the US infant mortality rate in 1900 (death before the age of 1 year) was something like 25%. Obviously those aren't all solved by c-sections (vaccinations and proper sanitation are probably the two biggest factors), but it's still part of it.
