Default 1995 626, whos had one, tell me what to look for

I just got a 1995 Mazda 626 with the 4 cyl, and 5 speed. Can anyone that has experiance with this car tell me some things i should look for that may go wrong on this car? It has 180k on it.

The timing belt breaking. Only thing I've ever done to a 626 was the timing belt and water pump. Friend bought the car not running and fixed it and sold it. That's all I know.

It's very similar to the old Mx6 RS I had with the FS 4-banger. Yep, stay on top of the timing belt. The 5-speed is a good unit. the ATX in those cars was complete ****, so good job on avoiding that.

The FS is a fairly bullet-proof engine. A buddy of mine had almost 275,000 miles on his old MX6 with that motor, and he beat the crap out of it on a daily basis.

Awesome, all good news. I did know ahead of time to stay away from the auto trans. THis car is very clean on the inside, and i got it for 2k, hopefully i can get another 20-40k miles out of it. I will prolly go ahead and change the timing belt soon. I think the clutch is about done too, it doesnt slip, but the peddle doesnt have much travel.

the 2.0L 626 with manual trans is a bulletproof machine if you do one fix

there is only one deffect I know of which all these have - the coil ingnitor fails, but for few bucks you get few wires and GM HEI ignitor from your local auto parts store and wire it externally ... and in 10 minutes your engine is up and running again.

you better do that mod in advance otherwise you'll get stranded sometimes somewhere to the side of the road

I had a v6 ES and it was great. Loved it for the KL v6 and <3000lbs with the five speed. Never had anything out of the ordinary happen to it in 80k miles. Excellent DD IMO- at far less than an accord or camry.

I have a 1997 mx6 with the KL and I love it. The FS and KL distributors both have shitty ignitors so that mod works for both engines. Just change the timing belt on the FS and you should be good. Check out mx6.com for some great info on the FS engine.

Yup. So instead of changing the entire distributor unit every time (coil, ignitor, cam sensor, distributor - everything is in that single unit), one just have to cut a couple of wires and wire in the new ignitor externally.
The distributor doesn't even have to be opened for this mod to be done. It is a 15 minutes thing and a trip to the local auto parts store

Forgot about the ignitors. Go on mx6.com or probetalk to find some info on the HEI mod. It's not that hard. I recommend mx6.com, but only because i'm a moderator there.

OBD I. jump Ten and Gnd in the diag box and it will tell you the error codes by the CEL blinking - just like a '90-'95 Miata

No, it has the KL motor that was made by Mazda. By the way what's up Trent(supersaiyan93)? I'm the one on mx6.com with StreetThisMx6's motor. Duratecs weren't put in 626's ever.

We had a late 80's model realy shitty electrical system was our only problem. It was bad enough to have my mom wreck it into a poll though.
