Quite a lot.
Houston is a very large urban city, with all of the problems that come along, such as a high crime rate, terrible traffic, high housing costs, etc. The weather sucks, and there's really no feeling of class or culture to the place.
Austin, while still a large city, feels somewhat more sophisticated. It's not nearly as dense, and tends to be much more highly rated in quality-of-life factors.
That said, I've done business in both cities and wouldn't want to live in either of them. Oregon and Colorado are two states I'd look at if I had the freedom to move anywhere I wanted.

I spent some time around Houston when my wife lived there and I thought it was pretty nice. Everything is new, there is lots of money and there seemed to be lots of stuff to do around the city. The heat might be a bit of a turnoff, especially if you are from the great white north.
no one ever leaves the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Every Single person here has been in the area for like 100 generations, or they just moved here and are never leaving. I don't know what it is exactly, but lots of people seem to like it. It certainly isn't the weather, I think we get more rain than Seattle.
Despite being the butt of all jokes, I like West Virginia a lot. The people are the friendliest I have ever met, and the entire state is just rolling mountains with dense forests.

if it's not snowing in VA then it's +80% humidity and 90°.
Although this spring/summer has been the most pleasant I can remember in the last 10 years. But it was one of the worst winters, it was snowing here in April.
But if you want a job, and get paid a **** ton, then you want to move here.

I got a room for rent in Charleston SC. I can get you in contact with some friends who work in the car industry and could probably get you in at a local shop.
Have you looked into getting a work Visa and what all is required to legally work in the states?

Everyone that's been to CA that's not a OR living elitist hippie has loved it.
I love it. I've yet to visit a state/city that I would gladly leave CA for. And I've been to OR/WA plenty of times. No thank you.
That said, it sounds like you're a n00b with a quick degree and low to no experience in the field. You are not desirable. That means for the next few years you're gonna have to do a lot of work, for mediocre pay, and little appreciation, until you get some experience under your belt. Then you can consider desirable and decent paying jobs.

come at me in real life, bro.
@shuiend : Yes I have, it's a lot of hassle but if I go there for work, it's a bit easier. I have to enter a lottery and everything, it's pretty wierd.
I finish my course later this year so I have plenty of time to check it out also one of my closest friend happens to be american and he knows a bit about that since he brought his gf with him down there for a little while so he has gone through that process.
jesus christ, punctuation bro.

Well, I WOULD say Move to PA.... Ive lived all over the country, and this is definitely one of my favorite places... Probably in my top 3.... BUT, we get some decent winters here, and you dont want that. I didnt want it either, but the economy, and job availability here was too good to pass up. So, the first winter came, and i went out and bought a snowboard (hadnt boarded in almost 10 years) Now the winters arent just "bearable" but ENJOYABLE rather. Was my most hated season, now its my favorite. lol And the landscape here is awesome. Lots of long windy back country roads to cruise too.... as long as its not near pittsburgh, because you will just lose your car in a pothole, especially if you have a miata. The potholes here have been known to destroy Suburbans... just imagine what they will do to a miata. lol
The summers here are nice though...
But i just recently came from Missouri where the temp would creep up to 110 (43 celsius) with 100% humidity. You literally walk outside, and begin to drown, and that hot moist air would scald your lungs..... Then we had Tornadoes..... and HUGE hail..... Then in the winter, we would have ice storms, that would shut down the power to entire cities for over a month straight....
Oh and the economy there..... It works off the good ol' boy system... if you dont know someone, you wont get a job.... and if you DO happen to get a job, 90% of the time, it will be minimum wage. Total shithole.... But if you like caves, and outdoorsy stuff, its the ****... As long as you dont get sucked into a Tornado,
Alabama, is... well.... Alabama.... Hot, Humid, and full of Wellfare.
Wisconsin is the ****, but again.... Winter.... lol
Oregon is amazing, but again... winter.
I love colorado, but again.... winter...
Its kinda hard to find a happy medium. Just do some of your own research, and decide for yourself.... You may have to give up one of your requirements in order to meet the Rest, Because Murrica is Murrica...
Also, when it comes to "best place to live", Everyone has their own opinions. Californians Love california.... But it sucks. (see, thats my personal opinion at work there) lol
I gave up my "no winters" requirement to have great opportunities, and live in a beautiful state, with good jobs. And in the meantime, picked back up an old passion of mine.

I've stopped at the classic Lancaster, Hershey, Allentown, Reading, Philly. Been there. It's a nice place and I guess being not that far from home after all would be a nice thing.
I'll take your word on the job opportunities though.
Another big plus for me on the east coast is all these autox things and racetracks... compared to canada where there are virtually none.

And with good reason; it's the best state in the union IF you have a job that pays well and can afford to live the good life.
For someone just starting out in the auto tech field, southern CA would be nearly as bad as Texas in terms of finding good-paying work. Tons of competition from immigrants willing to work for low-wages. Northern CA would be better in this regard, though it's not as nice a place to live.

hahaha, Ive lived all over... I just like the Landscape of WV
But, im also a person who enjoys My personal freedom, my guns, and privacy... so my opinion might not count, seeing as how PO didnt mention any of those. haha
Consider My opinion invalid in that case. LMAO
PA has a little of everything when it comes to landscape, and outdoors stuff, with some city action too. I have about 6 different Major cities within 6 hours of here. And, good jobs. I know of some 17 year olds, fresh out of highschool, making $25 an hour with no experience or college degree.
Probably doesnt sound like much to you Californians, but you can buy a Crazy nice house out here for Sub $150,000..... $150,000 house in CA would probably be 1 bedroom, with a livingroom/kitchen Combo. lol :P
