My wife and I have been trying for months to come to a consensus on names for our second daughter. I really like the name we came up with for our first, Elise Rose. Elise, after the car and to continue the "tradition" on my side of the family of Lotus-themed names (my middle name is Colin). Rose because, uh, like, it's okay sounding I guess. My wife picked that part.

With this one though, no dice. I'm not going to resort to Europa, Evora, Exige, Seven, etc. I can't use Anthony or Bruce because it's a girl. We were also going to use Maxwell if it was a boy (from the Beatles song, and my dad's first car was named Maxwell).

I suggested Laila (means "night" in Arabic) but that evokes the Clapton song. My wife keeps throwing out names like "Mia" and "Eva". Blech.

Then last night she said, "How about Lola?"

I started showing her pics of Lola's race efforts through the decades and whatnot, and I really thought we'd come to an agreement we could both live with. Then she found there was a song to go with that one too...

Now my mom is even trying to talk me out of Lola. I swear, this baby isn't going to have a name...

Dolores means "sorrow", according to my research yesterday. It's a reference to the virgin Mary. Is there another meaning I should be aware of?

That is correct but; Jeff is dead on when he says that "dolores" in regular conversation is pain in Spanish.

Koto, if you like that name, by all means use it. It wasn't my intent to discourage you. I just thought you should have all the facts.

Lola is a very common nickname in Spain. It would be something similar to "Becky" or something like that in the States.

Koto, why so hung up on finding something to "name her after"? It's cool for you, but have you considered when she turns 10 or 18 or 30 how she's going to feel about being named after grandpa's first car? Sorry man, sounds pretty lame.

I say this because I'm going through this same ****. My wife's middle name is Louise and she hates it. I mean she really hates it. We don't talk about it and I'm not allowed to tell people... HATES IT! She hates it because it was a family name handed down over a few generations that should have died back in the 50's when names like Gertrude, Phyllis, Dorothy(Delores is in there), etc... went out of style. Names that remind you of a chain-smoking cackly-voiced telephone operator (you've seen the movies with the row of seated women all plugging in cables) should not be given to your kids for the same reasons as naming them after cars... my opinion.

Again, opinion... you shouldn't be thinking about what YOU think. Instead, give some thought of your kid in 10 years trying to explain to all her pre-teen friends who are going to give her endless amounts of **** why she's got a weird name. How about guys name Ashley or Francis or *******... yah, super cool Dad, thanks a lot!

We named our first daughter Cameron Lily. Cameron was the name of one of my best friends who was killed in the line of duty, and Lily was something we found that sounded like it matched and was suitibly feminine and offset the uni-sex nature of Cameron. It seemed like a good plan, hopefully she doesn't hate me for naming her after a good ol'boy Louisiana redneck who was terrible at poker and for who "having a few beers" meant he was probably going to need a medivac... and there's always Cameron Diaz to lend some weight to it being an acceptable female name. But I know there will be times in her life that "explanation" will be needed. How many times in her life will she show up places and somebody will say "OH, you're a girl, I had no idea"... how will those things play out? I wonder.

My wife and I are at war right now over our next daughter (c-section 26Mar) and what to name her. She wants a "family" name from the 50's that is exactly like her ******* middle name that she hates. I can't ******* believe it! I'm a fan of something standard and a little country, something American and strong... I really like Carly Allison. Of course, the wife hates it. I actually like Lola (transvestite song's aside), but that's what my sister named her dauchsund.

Sam, I was only considering Maxwell for a boy, and then only because it was a name before it meant anything in our family. If my dad's first car had been Sparky, for example, I wouldn't consider it.

Same with Elise and Lola, they're both names before they're car names. I don't think kids on the playground are going to know anything about the Kinks, and Lola has been a fairly popular name in Spain and France the last few years, not that that ought to count for much. I guess I'm trying to say I don't see much wrong with it.

Rebeca LeAnne

Rebeca (with one "c") is pronounced the same in English and Spanish, so she doesn't get confused as a tot, or resent one side of the family later when they don't say her name the same way. We've got a very short list of the few names that sound the same in both languages.

LeAnne is my mother's middle name. Don't know why we did that, almost regret it...but it (and the double cap) were a nod to her, and she takes car of our daughter daily....so there you go.

Just give the poor kid a name. It's also better to give them a full name so they can use it, or their middle name, or the usual nickname, but consider the nicknames. We are alright with "Becky" (or "Beca" in spanish), but Daniel was our boy name, and both of us hate "Danny."

Last but not least, when you decide on a name, go to your back door and shout it 15times...see if you still like it.

My honest opinion on Lola is that it's nice. Find a good middle name that sings to it, like Lola Marie.
