They more than likely killed the attacking alligator. Which is unfortunate because the man was invading his territory and its in its nature to defend itself. They always kill an animal when it attacks a person instead of just capturing it and moving it.

Like that one documentary that appeared on discovery channel eariler in the year where the guy was following a pack of bears around. He ended up getting too close and they killed him. Shortly after some people came back and killed the offending bears for defending themselves.

i stopped mountain biking after i moved here. one the trails in the park my wife and i went to had a cougar attack. apparently it wasn't the first. i'm sure a big, dumb corn-fed white guy on a mountain bike looks like an easy meal.

I swam in that lake back when I was in Charleston. This **** makes me really happy it never happened to me. I do really agree that the animal should not have been killed though. Darwin's anybody?

I think both of your diametrically opposed views are a little extreme. They obviously killed the alligator to retrieve the man's arm so it could be reattached, this is not uncommon. If an animal had one of your arms in its stomach, and there was a chance for reattachment, you'd probably be pretty pissed if they didn't try to get your arm back.

As for killing all animals that attack humans, that's bullshit. Animals don't often attack people unprovoked. People are idiots. I'd be for exterminating all animals that attack humans as long as we can exterminate stupid people as well.

i fail to understand why people are A.) continually surprised by this sort of thing, or B.) get angry at the animal when it happens. WE are the ones trespassing onto THEIR home. If someone waltzes into your residence, you feel as if you should be allowed to defend it, etc... if you know damn well there are alligators in XYZ pond/lake/whatever, why the hell are you surprised when you get your arm bitten off for swimming with them?

It's the same reason why they put "Do Not Drink" on **** like Windex. Somewhere along the line, society in general lost all common sense and decided that it's easier if people held our hands and guided us through life. Apparently the memo that swimming in waters known to be populated by alligators, crocodiles, and sharks slipped through that office's in box. Oh well, guess it's time to post signs with illustrations (so we can pander to the illiterate) every 50 feet or so.

I believe in self preservation before preserving animals. I suppose in this case, it would be best to move if possible since aligators are by nature agressive to humans (right?). I live in California and we have bears here who I believe need to be killed if they become agressive behaviors since it is natural for them to fear humans and agression to humans is a "learned" behavior. Same goes for some of the wildcats in our region. Sorry if you don't agree.

btw, i like to go backpacking and its nice to know that the rare animal that learns to attack humans is removed.

akaryrye- animals don really "learn" to attack humans.....if you **** any animal off they will attack you, doesn't mater if its wild or domesticated, its natural instinct for anything, including humans.
If you get into a fight with someone they don't shoot you/him afterwards because you "learned" to attack people....

now im not saying that animals are the same as humans but by your statement you think you can kill whatever you want.

it just seems that you're forgetting that the animals were here before we were.

yeah they shot the alligator in the head because it was just sittin there lookin at him. After cutting into the alligator's stomach to get the arm out i don't think they were able to reattach it anyway ( has to be a clean cut to reattach i think and a bitten/ripped off arm is not clean in any way ), not sure if he's still in critical condition or not....

Good Lord and butter. Being a predator, the gator has learned to attack humans, and that they are squishy and go well with a nice merlot. So if the offending predator was not extermanated, it would have attacked again, given the chance, regardless of where it was relocated to.

That sucks for the guy, but you gotta watch out for that. That's crazy...my family used to go there fishing all the time when we lived at Charleston AFB. We even caught a little 4 ft gator with a fishing lure once. Well, actually, my little brother, who was about 4 at the time unintentionally snagged it.
