Default Need DVD player recommendations.

So my DVD player took a ****. What do you guys suggest? I dont want HD or Blu ray because id rather wait to see which one becomes industry standard. Just want something that will work good with my HD tv.

Get with the times... XBOX360's are way down in price and has great DVD playback and are upconverting... plus you can buy the basic model and get a harddrive on Craigslist really cheap. If you haven't joined the new era and set up a wireless network in your home, you're missing out. Stream anything from your computer to the XBOX and play it on your stereo/tv. HD-DVD players for the -360 are going for $119 now at BB.

If you truly only need a DVD player... one of the $69 Panasonics at BB/CC/Walmart will do you fine. Or find a used on on Craigslist.

I agree. Either cheap DVD one or just get a Xbox 360. In addition to what samnavy said, Microsoft currently have a working Bluray addon drive for the 360 (Toshiba pulled out from the HD format battle, so no point about getting a HDDVD drive) which will be going retail any moment. Also Netflix will be releasing their service on Xbox Live - so you'll be able to rent movies online on your Xbox 360 instead of going to Blockbuster ... and finally the 360 has best current gen games library out there

Lets not get crazy here fellas. J_man where did you find that neflix is coming to xbox360?

The rumor was for both PS3 and XBOX360 systems, but nothing concrete. You hear something different?

If you want blu-ray and upconvert got with PS3 $400 bucks and your upveroncerting blu ray player gets all updates, plays divx and streams all media (is divix certified unlike 360).. Also has a uder upgradeable hdd...

I hope everyone gets the hint. Hes asking about a dvd player not a gaming console. So keep it on target ladies.

Yes I dont need nor want a game console. I dont play video games and have no interest in getting into another expensive hobby. I dont need to stream anything, I already have a media PC in my entertainment center with web access, so I already download movies and store them on my external HD. I also dont want HD or Blu ray because I dont buy movies I download everything. I know I could just play DVD's in my PC but I need something more simple for everyone else in the house.

Loki, how much for the DVD player.

The 360 has been Divx certified since Jan 08.

I used to have a nice samsung upconverting DVD player. They can be had on the cheap.

If you dont want Bluray yet but plan to buy one later, just walk into any store and askfor the cheapest one they have... I recently bought one for $25 brand new, it was a GPX or some chineese bs. I also have a 5 year old APEX that was $30 or $40 new and its still going strong.

There may be players out there that will do upconverted over component, but if they do, they're "breaking" the rules. HDMI with HDCP is the only official connection to allow upconverting.

That said, it is possible to get a DVD player that will do upconverting over component, but it typically requires a hack, or an older version of a player that doesn't prevent upscaling over component. I've got an LG that I "hacked" to do upconverting using some codes found online, for instance.

With the recent announcements by Warner (and with Toshiba dropping support for HDDVD), I just nabbed a PS3 for DVD playback. Very good quality player for either Bluray or upscaled DVD's. It's at least as good as my HTPC, and it's much easier to get up and running.

Cheers!

Jeff

What about DVI? My tv has DVI, and component inputs. Does DVI support upconverting? I would have to use a HDMI to DVI cable.

What is HDCP?
