no doubt the rings....they've been suspect since I put the engine in; Always had leaks, smells, by-blow, etc. Installing a catch-can acutally gave me too much of a pressure drop of vacuum in the crankcase that I would smoke oil in boost.

unfortunately this was probably the first time i drove it without the laptop hooked up and logging, so i dunno if there was a knock event (still have knocksense hooked up). I had the a/c running and it's about 90* out. I was acutally just coming to a stop to go back to work, slowed for the turn lane and the engine just quit....wouldn't crank back over, went through the basics...finally after about 30mins i tried again (waiting for flatbed). cranked over and was spitting burnt oil, figured the rings died, drove it home, parked it, going on vacation, figure something out later, no biggie, just miss a few autoxes

Sorry to hear that man. I know how it feels. Especially when people catch it on video.

I just picked up an engine stand and cherry picker if you want to come up and we'll do a big engine swap day, BBQ and all! Should be getting my replacement engine next week.

I found a '93 block for $100 about an hour south of me. Going to inquire about it Tuesday when I'm back.

Not looking to build up the 1.6, no time or money for it. If I build anything it will be a 1.8L or FE.

PS, never let Sam drive your car.....he'll break it. hahaha.

Most likely it's just a core block, not a short block....

I scored a core 2000 motor for $150...and after this thread and all the others, I'm happy about going against everyone's recommendation and building the bottom end.

Do you think that his problem was not having stong enough pistions or rods?

It's all in the tune! Famous last words "I know what knock sounds like".

Sorry Brian, hope you get it sorted out quickly.

everyone is trashing rings...and why can't anyone get the tune right? I can't imagine anyone not running a knock sensor.
