Default opinions sought--being a flamer

Project is my Murray 42" lawn tractor. I let a friend borrow it for a 'weekend' and 7 months later he finally returns it, beat to ****. He ran it without oil and seized the motor, then let it sit outside. So it left in typical lawnmower shape and came back non running, with fucked up paint. He dropped it off early on a Monday, about 6AM, and was gone before I got to the front door. And hasn't answered his phone since. ******.

I charged up the battery, busted the motor loose and opened it up, ghetto honed the cylinder and replaced the piston. Cleaned the airfilter and put in a new spark plug. Miata content: Who knew a Briggs & Stratton 16.5 hp cingle cylinder shared sparkplugs with the miata? Works for me, I got plenty.
I leveled the cutting deck, had to fix the pulley that engages the blades , and mowed the yard. It ran and mowed, but it was ******* ugly.

So, here comes Mission: Paint the Mower. Plan was flat black with 2 stage flames in yellow and orange, and black wheels.

Here it is in spray can 'primer'

Here it is with orange applied (I was going to mask the orange for orange flames, then spray yellow and mask for the yellow flames, then spray flat black over everything)

This got me to thinking, instead of flat black with the 2 color flames, what about all orange with flat black flames? Or orange hood with gloss black flames, and the rest of the mower in gloss black? Third option, orange flames on gloss pure white mower? The flames will be free hand pinstriped in a contrasting color no matter what.

Ideas? Working with the gloss orange was much easier than flat black. I'm also partial to gloss black, flat black, and gloss white because those colors are only $1/can

I like the idea of orange flames on white.

i also like the idea of getting a 10 lb bag of birdseed and seeding your "friend's" lawn while he sleeps. make sure to put a lot near the car(s).

Yeah

It's meant to be an amusing title to an amusing project. The mower was looking like hammered ***, but the real goal of the project is to expose me to paint prep procedures in a low risk way. Worst thing that happens is I make something that looks bad... uhm, look bad.

The orange color is called 'Popsicle Orange', so I thought it would be funny to the rest in white. I saw a bike painted pure white with orange flames and it looked really good.

Hahahhaa this is actually a really funny thread. I would rather see you use the roller method though!

Actually I think it would be fantastic if you really "modded" it up a bit. Wing, intake, APC stickers. Really "mod" it

All that orange overspray on the flat black reminds me of the guys that do "real flames" might be a chance to try your hands at those rather than pinstriped/ conventional flames. Whatever you do, don't do white. You wanna make it look mean!

Thanks Matt

Brad, I was actually planning on putting a naca duct on the intake side, since I'd have to cut metal and bond it, just like what Scott did on his barn door lid. Would be practice. I already wired up the 'headlamp' so they actually work now; they never did since I got the mower. Was going to replace the 1156's with some of those super bright white LEDs, maybe I'll do red or something to help rice it up a bit.

I thought about brightsiding it, but that's actually a lot more work--10 coats with sanding between each. I don't want to invest that kind of time into it.

Cue, good eye on the overspray. That was intentional--I was actually testing my ability to fade. I would prefer real flames, but lack the skill.

do the whole thing in camo and attach a gun rack. Then cover yourself in deer urine.

You'll end up spending like 30 bucks on a NACA duct. I have a spare drivers side headlight lid, practice on that.

The best thing is...

It's just paint.

For a buck or 2 a can you have nearly unlimited Do-overs. Have fun. Keep trying on the real flames. There should be some info on how-to out there I would think.

the white would look sweet but I would not want it on a lawnmovwer just cause that **** will look like *** afterwards.

BTW I second the vote for nopi the lawnmower. If you enter into the event I would so be there. Just so we can laugh at how your lawnmower is better then most of the cars...lol
