I had an interview with a great local company today, would be a smashing way to lead off 2016 if I could nab it.

It was actually three separate interviews:

1. HR generalist, and the engineering managers from both brands in the building.
2. The Director of HR.
3. The VP of Operations.

I'm currently crafting a thank you note for the interview and to follow up and what we spoke of.

I was originally going to send one email to the entire group, but now I'm thinking one thank you note to each "group" of interviewers, so 3 separate notes?

it doesnt hurt to be too polite. at the very least you can thank them for taking time out of their busy day to give you an opportunity, etc.

I typically try to send each person a somewhat personalized email. It has the ability to be a bit time consuming if you have interviewed with several people, but it drives home the point that you're interested and sincere.

The bit about "several people" can be rough if it's actually "seven people", which was exactly my experience about two weeks ago. I'd recommend a blanket letter for peers and reasonably personalized ones for key players in a rigorous day. Three interviewers, though, is definitely three letters.

What in the hell kind of jobs are you people interviewing for that require SEVEN interviews?

Software jobs in the valley are usually 4-6 interview sessions of 45-60 minutes each, with 1 or 2 interviewers in each session. Back at my previous job (Cisco) we'd have 8 engineers, 1 manager, and 1 HR person talking to any given candidate. I've managed to stay out of the interviewing game at my current employer, so I'm not sure how many it is here.

I went ahead and did:

1. 1 Email to group one (1 to each person that was in the same room seemed a bit redundant.)
2. 1 Email to HR director.
3. 1 Email to VP of Operations.

intro/outro/I'm interested/my experience/ blah blah

But in each email, I hit 4-5 points, specific to THAT interview about why I'm interested and feel I'm a good fit for the position.

Should know by the end of next week. Sure would be nice, we know there are layoffs coming where I work now (and I was laid off last year at a different company), but we don't know how many or when.

Yay for manufacturing jobs going to SE Asia.

HR called me today to let me know they are moving to the next step and would be calling my references either today or tomorrow.

So I was able to give them all a heads up. Apply to interview to calling references in 2 weeks. And only 36 hours since I interviewed, I'm hoping it's a good sign.

They were only looking for someone with an Associates and 2 years, and I bring a Bachelor's with 8 years of experience and 4 in their specific industry.

Congrats! Hope it's what you want and you get it OK.

My last interviewee for a new position just left; everyone has sent a nice follow-up e-mail, I expect the same from this one. It's a nice touch, but I personally don't need one.

Our 2 finalists are recent college grads, from VERY small towns in upstate NY, and very broke. Today's drove away in a 1999 Cherokee that she bought for $700 - it almost didn't start and looked dangerous. I'm actually worried about it getting all the way home. The other guy has a 97 LeSabre, ugly but cheap and reliable. Both are carrying significant college loan debt.

I had forgotten how shitty it is to be young, in debt, broke and without a job. I'm crushed because they're both good kids, both need the job and I can only hire one.

Finally called me yesterday and offered me the job. Apparently the hold up was getting the Board of Directors to approve my pay rate since they were originally looking for someone with less experience.

It's still not as much as I have made in the past, but it will be nice to get in with a good company and not have to be stressed on edge on a daily basis about whether the contract will be canceled.

Assuming no issues with background check or drug test (I drank a couple of beers last night with dinner) I'll be starting next week.
