I had a law teacher explain it to me like this. Say you catch someone in your house stealing your VCR (I'm old, I know) and you beat the **** out of them, they can charge you with assault.
He said that you would have to be holding the VCR and have the person rip it out of your hands, then it becomes assault and you beating them up is self defense... its very lame indeed.
I think if your dog were to bite someone that broke in here you would catch **** for that unless you had a "Beware of Dog sign" clearly posted.
The way I see it if you are in my house uninvited then I should be able to do whatever it takes to get your *** out ASAP, but not in Canada sadly. I am very envious of the laws you guys have in the US with regards to home invasions and guns.
EDIT: I always loved the look of that gun, is that a Colt 1911?

I had an entire subway car all to myself on the uptown #1 this evening:
Kind of weird. I think this is the first time this has happened. I passed the time by "surfing" in the middle of the car (standing up, not holding onto the rail.)

Nope. You can't even injure someone if you catch them in your house.

It's a 1911, but I don't think it's a Colt 1911, and if it is, they modernized it. You can tell because of the safety on the back of the grip below the beaver tail. If you want to know for sure I'd go to the gun thread and ask Pusha.

That's an R62A train, mid-80s vintage. They also have 'em on the 7 and S lines.
Most of the trains of that era, both IRT and BMT, have the same basic color scheme, going as far back as the mid 70s vintage R46s that are still in use on the A line (those cars absolutely suck- the HVAC system has only two settings (off and broken) and you can never hear the conductor.)
The newer trains, like the R142 and R160 have a much simpler design scheme, with light blue bench seats. I find these more efficient in terms of seating- it's easier to squeeze more people into the same linear seat space. They also have automated, pre-recoded station announcements which are actually intelligible and moving-map displays which show the present location of the train relative to all of the stops on that route. Very nice, especially if you're riding a line that you're not intimately familiar with.

The solution is simple as elaborated by a former police officer now gunsmith & CCW instructor. Much unlike hollywood movies, post shooting in your home or place of business will not produce a police swat team seconds from the event. In his words, "Assuming you haven't already called 911, there will be quite a lot of time between the incident and police on scene. Plenty of time to issue the perpetrator a weapon of choice from your own kitchen for example."
This may sound extreme, but I'd have no sympathy for some piece of **** who crosses the line to take something that doesn't belong to them. If you could shoot someone for breaking your car window out to steal a 99$ cd player and not face any criminal prosecution, I Think the world would be a better place.

Some of them are built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, as I understand it. Do you know this to be true?
They also build Japanese bullet trains.
edit: Yep I found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R160_%2..._Subway_car%29
