This may be true but I still disagree. I believe in positive reinforcement when someone is doing a good job, but man, when they're sucking just to say "oh, you're special blah blah blah" is BS.. If one of my employees isn't doing well, which happens frequently I'll coach them in a very positive way, but I don't say "we're all winners even though your scorecard says you're the shittiest employee I have.." When they've improved, which most of the time they do, I'll make sure to go out of my way and point it out to them, my team, and the department head.

Edit: Oh, and "time out" in a room with a effing computer, an ipad, ipod, cell phone, and tv is a Huge fail. If I did something wrong and broke the rules my father got the BELT out and administered punishment. You bet your *** that straightened me up.

Funny enough, I also think everyone should get arrested at least once. Those who have some resemblance of brain matter in their skull, that'll knock their ---- straight. I messed up when I was 21 and got hooked up, bet your *** I straightened my ---- up.

I can certainly remember what it was like the first year of college, suddenly coming to the realization that "hey, I'm surrounded by a bunch of other smart people and I actually have to work to get decent grades."

To an extent, I suppose this sort of thing is inevitable. It's not really practical at the level of a general K-12 school environment to tailor curriculum and workload to individual students. It is inevitable that lessons / homework / etc must be developed based on a sort of "average", which will of course leave a minority of students at the left end of the curve frustrated and bewildered, and those at the right end bored and alienated.



Yes, it's not uncommon for those who return to school in their 30s to have difficulty re-acclimating to efficient study habits.

remember this is for developing children, not for high schoolers or middle aged adults. I'm talking less than 5 years old. your employees brains are done developing.

I'm saying that when your kid is trying to learn how to read and not getting it, you tell them they worked hard. and then when they DO get it and start reading, you praise the effort they put into it.

then when this same kid is old enough to be your employee (for example), they will understand that success is important, but busting their asses to accomplish a task is also important.

I was never belted or arrested. I guess I'm not a whole person.

I've never even been pulled over. Suck it.

I guess it's ok for kids under 5, but I still think some (when done at an older age) of this contributes to people settling on passing grades, happened to me. I'm smart, but I was too lazy to study. I remember other students talking about how long they studied, compared to the >45 minutes I would study (I'm being really generous with that time frame), and we'd end up with the same grade. I'm sure I would have done better in Spanish had I studied, maybe even math too.

The problem is, kids are getting trophies for not doing ----. Not everyone is a winner. BUT most people can be pretty decent at something if they try hard. Just because your son sucks at basketball doesn't mean he can't play it for fun, or heck maybe even be on a crappy team. But he shouldn't get a trophy or the same treatment as those who won, just for participating. This brings down the kids who tried hard and actually had some talent.

And if anything we need to be pushing those kids more. Discriminating against kids that are really smart and talented is worse IMO. Sure most of the smart kids will get by just fine because, well, they are smart. But if we stop giving the smart kids attention because they are "doing well", then we have failed. That is why parenting is so important, and why I am waiting until I'm in my 30s to have kids. I want to be able to focus on them. You can't rely on others to motivate and teach your kids. That would be dumb. But the bad parents do. And then complain when their kids aren't getting trophies.

It was intended to be a joke, Dr. Cooper. I was poking fun at the fact that the woman in he picture, who we are to assume from context is a typical college student, appears instead to be in her 30s. This plays on the stereotype that women, as a whole, prefer to appear younger than they actually are and will, if asked, tend to understate their true age, along with the resultant common social convention that it is considered insulting to a woman when another person (most commonly, though not exclusively, a man) judges her age to be greater than (or even equal to) her actual age.

The attached commentary about study habits served no purpose other than to create an environment in which the age joke could be inserted in an appropriate context and with some degree of subtlety.
