Yes. The 350 was parked outside, facing the bay, with the window down. It began to rain. The mechanic very thoughtfully went out and got in the car to roll the window up. Apparently, he went past "run" and hit "start", while the transmission was in gear.
At least, that's what the story said. It seems slightly implausible, but whatever. The 350 clearly drove into the bay and dislodged whatever that thing on the lift is.
Am I the only one who refuses to park my car while in gear? I've parked in neutral for so long that on the rare occasions when someone else has driven my car (eg: after an inspection or tire change) and then subsequently parked it in gear, I pretty much always get in and hit the starter without even looking, causing the vehicle to lurch forward against the parking brake and making me look like an idiot. (I bypass the clutch / starter interlock switch in all my cars.)
I always park in gear. I stopped trusting e-brakes when the one on my Mustang failed. This caused the car to roll down the driveway backwards, across a busy street, jump a curb and slide down an embankment stopping 3' from the edge of some dudes pool. Recovering the car was ...a challenge. The only thing that stopped it was the fence that I ended up rebuilding to keep the guy happy.
I've also disabled the starter/clutch interlock on every standard trans vehicle I've ever owned. How hard is it to get in the habit of wiggling the stick before you hit the key?

I used to suffer from the exact same psychosis, but somewhere along the way devolved into laziness/normalcy. I'm still well trained from my first car, a '92 Jetta, which came from the factory with no clutch interlock. After one or two scares in that - the torsion beam made the rear squat and front pull forwards as the drivetrain strained against the parking brake - I'm OCD to this day about checking for transmission neutrality before taking my foot off the clutch after an engine start.
Once at a motorcycle rally in New Hampshire, I witnessed the result of cranking a Harley without the clutch while the bike was still on its sidestand. After watching the unmounted rider get pulled by the handlebars and the bike fall over after rolling halfway into the street, all of a sudden the metric bikes' complement of clutch/neutral interlocks and sidestand switch didn't seem like such a bad idea.
Am I the only one who thinks you're ******* bonkers not leaving it in gear, where do you live, Kansas? Parking brakes fail, ya know.
I disabled my start switch with the new clutch, I still never start without the clutch in. Cars have mandated starter interlocks as long as I've been around, and it's not so easy to disable it on all vehicles. Old habits die hard, I guess.
<p>My only 2 manual cars have been a 72 F-100 (wtf is safety anyways, I'll just run you over) and a 90 miata. With the ultrasheild seats I have being able to reach into the car and start it without the clutch in is ******* magical.</p>

never once had an issue because i also dont smash the gas pedal while starting.
i dunno how those new fancy start button cars work. but i thought you still had to put your foot on the brake... or am i still not understanding correctly?

As light as stock as the FM1 feels I can't imagine it could cause much damage, right?
I hope so, because I still start with the clutch in 99.9% of the time.
My buddies 07 R56 with key-less fob deal has to have the clutch in to start still. It doesn't make you hold the brakes, though an auto trans r56 keyless mini will.

That was the word on my TL1000S, too, and when I discovered this, and that the previous owner had jumpered the broken switch, I put in a functioning one. I can't say I really noticed a difference afterwards, though.
I noticed one hell of a difference, but that's because I had installed a aftermarket full setup and hadn't disabled the PAIR valve at the time. It popped and rocked a hell of a lot more with the clutch in, it made obscene amounts of backfire noise when you'd shift, didn't want to ride through the neighborhood at night, lol.
I got a power commander, loaded a tune I found somewhere online, a marble to shove in the stupid pear valve, I'm sure it was fixed, sounded fixed. I love that bike!

Holy ****, Tom Bush Mazda is right across the street from where I work.
The traffic is ******* horrendous on that road. People drive like total idiots.
Judging by the fact that majority of those cars on that list are Honda civics...this just goes to show you the amazing upstanding voters that live in that area. (No offense to you, props to your anti theft tactics.)
