^ This.

I experiance the same thing every time I switch between my Miata and a rental midsize sedan. I'll look down and find myself going 90 MPH without even knowing how I got there.

Old cars and cheap cars *seem* much faster and more exciting at lower speeds than new and expensive cars, mostly because they are loud, unrefined, unstable, poorly-composed, etc.

In terms of "excitement," few things are more exciting than driving a 60s-era swingaxle Volkswagen. But if you want performance, laptimes, etc., put your money on the new car every time.

When is the last time you really prodded around a 70s vintage car? Most of them were made of tinfoil and compressed rust, with foam dashboards and door cards fashioned from simulated vinyl glued to a backer of old Chinese newspapers.

The cars of the 70s were flimsy, rattly, cheap-feeling shitboxes.

I'll certainly agree here. One of the things which I appreciate about my '90 Miata as compared to a modern car is the functional simplicity of it. The Miata doesn't try to guess as to whether I want the headlights on, or the wipers, or whether I want the doors locked or unlocked, or whether I want the radio to increase in volume as I speed up, or any of a thousand other things. My car is simply a tool which responds to my commands, rather than making a half-assed attempt to anticipate them.

See that's funny, because one thing I would like on my Miata is for the volume to increase/decrease with speed. Maybe I'll see if I can output my vss signal from my MS3 and use it to control volume.

That feeling when you see one of the things you really, really....really want. It's very rare to see these. Being let go for $4,000.

The first time you come in a crash you'll see...i mean FEEL the difference

Cars back then didnt even have a single air bag for your face. Modern cars on the other hand have as many as 12-15 air bags. Also the sound system in old cars was ****. You get 2 little 4" speakers and thats your stereo. Most cars today come standard with 6 8-10" speakers + a sub. Also Air conditioning, also power steering, emissions stuff (Not just a single cat), stiffer chassis, sound proofing, the list goes on.

Ever driven an old mustang? Feels like an engine mounted on a wet noodle on wheels.

yes, I have. 1968 Camaro @ 50+ mph, and I came out of it unscathed... cant say the same for the 2000 mountaineer I was in years ago. 35mph front/side impact/t-bone and the airbags fucked up my face.

as for the camaro, not sure what happened honesty, but the cheating factor was it had a roll bar and 5 point harnesses, on a track and I was 12

I was a passenger for both. Gotta find pics of the mountaineer though

The 1957 Thunderbird had that volume control vs. speed option.

I had an H2 with bigger mikunis and expansion chambers. Scariest bike I ever owned. Absolutely scary fast and handled for ****. I remember reading a road test where the quarter mile time was low 12 seconds.

The biggest problem was the rear swing arm geometry sucked unless you changed out the shocks and even then you'd pogo in a hard corner. Real confidence builder.
