Default Best non ipad for IT person/department

Powers at be have given me the ok to find a tablet to use for work. Wanted a win 7 as i know i can install anything and everything i want on one that i will need. Then i started looking at them to find there are maybe 3 that would work out and all 3 suck in 1 way or an other so droid might be the next best thing.

Both my boss and I have tablets. He opted for the Galaxy Tab, while I went the el-cheap-o route and got a flytouch 3.

The galaxy tab is nice. Good build quality and responsiveness. The big downside is that it has NO external ports unless you want to spend extra $$ to buy adapters for USB and whatnot that interface with its proprietary uniport.

The flytouch, on the other hand, has HDMI out, 2 USB ports (supports usb sticks/mice/keyboards/etc), a microSD slot, and the biggie, an ethernet jack. I rooted in and installed a terminal emulator. ******* boss status. Its so nice to be able to plug into any network jack and have network/internet access on our boats if I need to remote in via citrix to get at my notes (wi-fi doesn't penetrate the steel hull very well....). Very useful for light mobile troubleshooting. I also picked up a case with a keyboard for when I don't feel like using the touchscreen. Downside is that it is resistive and doesn't support multitouch, but it isn't that big of a deal to me.

The Asus stuff looks really good. I think when I go tab, I'll go that route.

To Jeff C's point, the work I do absolutely requires both a physical Ethernet port and an RS-232 port. (I am, in fact, using both of them in the background as I type this to load new firmware into a batch of SBCs.) So it's nice to see some support there. That machine is definitely going onto the list for when TunerStudioDroid comes out.

I agree...and yet I still want one.

There is a ridiculously expensive serial adapter for iphone/ipad. Plugs into the dock port and the other end terminates with RJ45. If I had any sort of apple product to use it with I'd have to convince my boss to buy one.
