http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread...68#post3015968 I was just having a little fun here. However it does beg an important point. The FM-II Voodoo is making 100+ HP less at 9 PSI of boost. Now while engine management is important, there should not be a 100+ HP discrepancy between the FM-II-H MSM and a 97 1.8 Miata at 9 PSI. Even after factoring in the Hydra, +3 PSI of boost, (I believe VA Beach has 93 octane) and the better MSM motor.

Mark,

In reality, there's not too many people that I don't like. I don't like people that mistreat animals. I don't like Hillary. You, however, I actually don't mind- I even have a certain amount of respect for your "educated E-thug" ways. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't, but I do recognize that your statements are thought out and have a point. As far as customers are concerned, I like all my customers. Some are easy and some are not, but that's business. I'm someone who works on Miatas 40 hours a week and has for quite some time. Before that, I worked almost as hard on other types of cars. Over the years I've gained experience and opinions that are based in reality, and I'm happy to share them. I'm also confident in my work. Is that arrogance? Seems to me that it is a common way of working among people that are really good at what they do. What do you do for a living? Are you good at it? Does it show? When people call me to ask for my opinion, I give it. I suspect you do the same. I prefer to tell a customer how I'd do it, and why, and let them decide if that path is for them. People can, and do, call around to get the opinions of others as well. What I don't do is have a conversation for the sake of talking- that happens when I get home every night! Some people want just to chat and that is difficult for me when I have so much on my plate that needs to be done, so I apologize if it comes off as dislike since that is not the case. I have lots and lots and lots of people on the phone and email every day and I try my best to answer all of their questions in an efficient, consise, and effective manner. I have guys who have spent zero money at FM, I have guys who have spent lots, and I even have guys who buy our competitor's stuff and call us when they can't figure it out. I almost always have an answer for the question at hand, however sometimes it's not the answer that someone wants to hear. (and they keep asking hoping I'll change my answer. Sorry.) I understand that not everyone in this world is bound to get along with everyone else, and I know I'm a pretty matter-of-fact type of guy, so I think the real question shoud be more like- do I tell you what you need to know, and do I do my job to the best of my ability. I'm a pretty ---- person when it comes to tuning and support and I beleive the answer is yes.

As for dyno number comparison- seriously people. I don't know about you, but I've dyno tuned hundreds of cars. I'm not too concerned about ~10% when you're comparing runs on different machines in different states of different cars. I'd be far more concerned about the upcoming election. Hell, I'm more concerned about D.C. vs Heller. All I know is I tune cars for a living and I call a fast car when I see it. Why a car is fast is not always something you can quantify- maybe it was built on Wednesday and yours was built on Friday. Maybe it's happy and maybe it isn't. Maybe the tuner is good at the system at hand and maybe he isn't. Yes, effective EBC will make a huge difference in the bottom end of the boost rise when compared to a MBC that may be a little soft on the upshoot. And, yes, octane makes a significant difference as well when applied properly.

P.S.- calling me a Shiv was about the biggest insult I've ever gotten that was car related.. Thanks guy.

Jeremy.

Jeremy.
welcome to the board. Its tough to earn respect on this board. No one really plays nice. 100whp from 3psi and stand alone is pretty stout, and probably more than the other dozen cars on here who've been down this road.

Totally different personalities. We can only strive to be as good as he is at tuning ANY vehicle. Putting aside personal feelings, he is the best at what he does. None of us are in his league.

You know, all my maps are unlocked for anyone to look at. That's fine with me. I'm on salary. I do understand why may tuners who have their own businesses lock their maps from view- to cover their a$$ from guys who punch buttons they shouldn't and to protect their intellectual property. Personally, I prefer the owner of the car to take some responsibility in ownership of the car & the tune rather than having no idea what is going on, so I leave the maps unlocked and even explain what's going on when requested. I encourage personal responsibility.

I've seen lots of maps from lots of other tuners. Some are good. Most are not. Some are downright dangerous. I saw a Shiv TEC map once that was unlocked. I wouldn't run that map on my car if you paid me. He's in a whole other league, all right. It's the Mushroom league. If you strive to be like him then you truly have a long way to go. Sure, anyone can pump fuel and timing at full throttle and make big dyno numbers, maybe with a little knock. Making a complete, safe, fully structured, daily driveable, long term reliable, AND powerful map in 3D is a whole other skill.

Oh, and Stephanie, you weren't even ON track nor do you know the circumstance so mind your own business. Besides, who cares if I went off. That's why they call it racing.

Shiv had some interesting theories on tuning... setting your fuel values so that the feedback loop could only correct by *adding* fuel to avoid surprise lean spots. A few other things along those lines. But man he had no clue about customer service.

IMHO, if your map is 100%, your setup is done right, and your equipment is capable (standalone) you wouldn't have suprise lean spots. No band-aid required.

When dealing with pigybacks however sometimes you just have to do what you have to do to make it work.

Jeremy.
LOL, really there is a certain genius to some of what Shiv did. I don't worship him but I did understand the concepts he tried to espouse. In a great many ways he was right about a number of things (and yes there are things that he and I disagreed on, and still do.) It wasn't that long ago that I had dinner with him and Corky. Believe me, liking Shiv or not, the company at that particular dinner was rather elevated. (Yes, I was the dumb one in the room.)

None the less, you'll notice that I didn't E-thug the 291 RWHP number. Not seriously. Although it does raise the question as to what can be done with the non-hydra cars to achieve higher levels of performance.

I do believe that with aggressive tuning and decent fuel, that a 100 RWHP difference between an FM-II voodoo and and FM-II-H and MSM motor is achievable. I have been preaching for years how important engine management has been, only to have respected people tell me that other systems were up to the task and not holding power back. Jeremy, of all people, I know you agree with this. This is why we have some level of respect for each other, I know you are not entrenched in fantasy land. At least not completely! You have made tremendous strides as a tuner as well, which is also something I see at BEGi as well.

With that said, arrogance is fine until you drive customers away, and I am talking about customers that have spent $5k on FM parts. It was just a heads up, you take it for what it is.

I do appreciate the heads up. I never have the intent of coming across as anything other than helpful, but I do know that sometimes meaning can be lost in translation when you're not face to face with a customer and can only work things out over the phone and internet.. Then, if people never come back to me with the issue and instead go complain to a forum that I'm not on then I won't know about the problem and don't have an opportuninty to make things right. Hopefully our presence here will help that out.

Funny article, but really the problems were pretty minor, and were over dramatized.
