What kind of $hit is that?
Pretty common tax. If you own real property, you pay it. Some states put it on things like airplanes and boats. I'm pretty sure there may be a state or two that levies on cars.

But yeah, a Ferrarri wouldn't be a lot of fun. I'd worry about driving it, let alone driving it hard.

And, to OP, there really isn't anything comparable to the Miata, especially when it comes to cost of maintenance and mods/bang for buck. It's a side-effect of being the world's most popular sports car, and a darn good racer at that.

Looking forward to seeing the ND.

Yes. We pay registration fees and a motor vehicle tax every year. They collect it in two installments, one in January, and the next one in July.
So, yes, you pay for a car, and then you pay for the privilege of owning it for the rest of your ownership of that vehicle.

And the incentive for driving?
$10 (or more) a gallon for gasoline.

I own my house and I pay yearly property tax. The school tax portion is the biggest one, about 200% more than my property tax, which is a story for another time. My car on the other hand...that's $36 a year for registration. Gasoline in my car to me is the same thing as paying an electric bill for my house. I don't generate the electricity, and I also don't refine my own gasoline, so I have no gripe about paying for it (except for the fact that it is a bit pricy, but oh well).
It just blows my mind that you can posses something and somebody else can say "hey, I know that belongs to you, but you still have to pay me a percentage every year just because you have it.

Hakan, That sucks...we have to pay a tax when ownership of the vehicle changes hands...other than that one time tax, it's just a registration fee. In my state it's $36 a year for cars.

I'd put the FB rx7 in this list. Parts are stupid cheap, and if you can get past the "wtf rotary?" there is nothing hard/no surprises.

the difference there is that there are a lot of 400-500rwhp rx7's mucking about, but they are not cars that belong to gifted tuners... Enter bad reputation for blowing up...
