Default If you could afford a GTR, would you buy one?

So needless to say, things in my life have drastically changed. We've been slammed with work and I couldn't be more grateful. I've been wanting to post here for awhile but between work and locking in with a new girl, time isn't what it once was.

Anyways, onto the reason I'm posting. I've been going over my finances lately and have come to terms that I can afford the GTR. As well as looking at every other car up and down like crazy, further confusing myself in the process. This would be a big nut to take on, but I have more financial stress with the business and I can afford it without living beyond my means.

For the last 2 years I've been driving around a 2007 Altima 3.5 and its boring as any car could be, but its been good to me. I can't knock its reliability after DD the Miata for years, which has been sitting for years.

I don't want to get rid of the Miata, that's for sure. I love that car and it costs me nothing to keep it, not to mention I could never replace the fun factor with what someone would realistically pay me for it.

I'm ready to jump on something in the spring. After test driving a SRT8 challenger awhile back, the hellcat version looks awesome as ****. Looking at ZL1 cameros, even the new vette. For some reason, this Nissan I have gives me faith that the GTR will probably be a good pick.

Looking for some input from guys who's opinions I respect. I'm not looking to have the coolest toy there is, but I'm at the point where I want to enjoy what I drive everyday and don't have time to build it myself. Instant gratification if you will.

If could afford the GTR, i probably couldn't afford to a brake job on it.
Now, a brake job on say a Corvette, i could afford.
Not to mention pretty much every part on a GTR is expensive, unlike the corvette.

If i could afford to keep a GTR going i would probably drive it through all of Michigans hellacious winters.

I can afford a GTR. And I don't have one and will never get one. Because I can have just as much fun in a bolt on subaru or turbo miata for 10-20% of the cost and I can put the extra money away or invest it into yet another house or.......

but that's just me.

The boss 302 is kinda on the right track in my opinion. I'd go one step further in that thought process and just get a coyote 5.0 GT with low miles cause they drop in price like crazy and can already be had for 20k. tha'ts 420hp or whatever for 20k, vs 500 for 80 or 100 or whatever gtr's go for.

again, just me.

a low mile c6 vette is 25-30. a low mile c6Z is like 40-45

I guess it's all about wants/needs though.

If you want a "mature" car and have tons of cash, I'd look into the IS-F or M3 or AMG Benz. That gets you power AND high quality.

Like I said, not looking to "build" a god damn thing. I wants to buy it and drive it. Bolt on anything doesn't meet the criteria. Used is fine, I'm totally down for something used.

Mature car? Not sure what that is. I want something new, fun and fast. That's it.

I was looking at BMW's and I'll just **** them up. I'm not looking for a cream puff interior that I'll just ruin.

Before reading any responses to this thread I'm just going to say that I was waiting for this thread for a long time. Now I'm going to read the responses to this thread and then I'm going to respond. I'm cooking dinner at the same time so standby for my amazingly awesome response.

Had this same discussion with a friend that was looking for a new toy. If it was me and I realize this is subjective , I'd spend more money on a better looking car that is slower. In my case it would probably say Porshe on the side. As impressive as the GTR is i don't want to have to look at one every day. Cheers and happy hunting.

If I had money to throw down for big power, I'd go for the SRT Hellcat (charger, preferably) or Cadillac CTS-V.

GTR is ugly. Like a committee tried to design it. I don't care how fast it is, if it looks like ****. Rather have a later model 'vette and save the cash.

You do know that some of the higher end newer cars gain something like +100hp from just a simple re-flash right? Not even bolting anything on.

Ok, so you don't want a "mature car", you want something with crappy interior and fit/finish but with a TON of power stock and really tough. There's plenty of options for that. GT500, ZL1, Hellcat, Viper, Corvette, the list goes on and on and on.

The GTR falls into that category, but I would never get one if I was going to keep it stock either. And GTR is going to cost a whole lot more to maintain than the cars I've mentioned above, because it has more "systems", sensors, clutch packs, diff packs, etc etc etc than all those "simple" 'MURICAN cars

Ultimately it's whatever fits your needs, and you've still not really outlined any requirements, only that it needs to be stock and newer and daily driveable. What specific requirements do you have aside from that? Turbo, v8, awd, manual, auto, sounds amazing, handles amazing, what?

Stock C6 ZR1. I've never driven anything as terrifying. I seriously love those after getting a chance to really drive one. The interior is mediocre but I could get one leave it stock and be more then happy with it.

I've never driven a GTR but I have driven other fast, heavily electronically controlled cars (SLS and Porsche Turbo S). Nothing can touch the ZR1, imho, in terms of excitement. And you can get a manual.

You said you want new, fun, and fast, that's it. kinda vague! What else do you want? Cheap, easy to wrench on, reliable, maintenance you can do yourself, good looks, classic or catchy looks? DD friendly? Track worthy? Warranty important?

You said no mods, so is that zero whatsoever, or is a tune-only ok?

Personally I shopped the GTR in 2013 and CTS-V. I was interested because GTR. It was going to be about 102K for the one I wanted, I sat in one they had in stock for 94K and started it up (they wouldn't let me test drive a new one) but I couldn't get over how cheap and unrefined the interior was for the price. But I had been looking at Mercedes before this.... I ended up buying a 14' C63 instead for 75K. Cheaper car, maintenance is much cheaper, 4 doors, much nicer/more features, simple motor compared to GTR (big na v8 revs high). Cons is not as flashy, not nearly as fast/capable, no trubos, trans not dual clutch, regular brakes, etc. But I'm ok with that, I wanted a sporty luxury sedan that's quick and fun and reliable and has a warranty, and so far I'm pretty happy with it.

My suggestion is figure out what you want, then go shopping and figure out what ticks all the right boxes. Before sitting in/driving both I would have picked the GTR then the CTS-V then last the C63 (basically faster = better at the time) After seeing, sitting in, and driving the C63 I had to have it.

I am actually in a unique position to answer this question with some first hand experience. I recently had a student at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway in a GTR. I ended up doing the thing you're never supposed to do and took him up on his offer to take the car out for a session.

First off... I was blown away by the thing. I've driven a few fast cars in my time but never anything so fast that honestly felt like it was going that slow. The car just effortlessly travels to mach 10 over and over like nothing strange is happening. By the third lap I was already turning laps on par with my fastest laps in the miata and the laps just kept getting faster the more of them I did. The grip in the car is seemingly endless. It puts power down in ways I didn't know cars could honestly pull of. You hit the gas and the car goes to mach 8, pull the paddle shifter hit the gas and it immediately slams to mach 9. Each gear hits just as hard as the last. I ultimately only got the car up to about 125 or so but it did so literally with no tire squeal and like it wasn't breaking a sweat. I was banging off laps that my miata could only dream of and the car had an easy 20-30% left in it on the bone stock setup with bone stock tires. Mind, effin blowing...

And I honestly couldn't have been more bored with it. Granted this was some one elses car so I was leaving much much less on the table and wasn't close to the cars limit. But it was like driving a 600whp playstation. The only thing exciting about the driving experience was looking down and seeing 20-40mph faster speeds at the end of the straight aways than my miata was capable of. The driving experience was solid, yet disconnected. Everything is masked in a layer of technical perfection. It's as if you created a list of the required items for having fun behind the wheel and let just enough of them through to remind you that you're actually doing some of the work, while the car is going mach 10.

I've never driven a "supercar" before where I got out of it and was like... amazing car but I'll keep my miata. For me to have fun in the GT-R I'd be breaking the law in ways that lead to a lost license, dangerous situations for me and those around me and lack of serotonin in my daily life. It's a car that takes lap times only available to those that are serious wheelmen and makes them approachable to the lay person. It's a car for those that want to hit the easy button and rip a 1/4 mile in technical perfection.

Overall it's a car that's technically perfect... and couldn't be more boring to drive except for the mind blowing drivetrain and engine package.

I've spent a ton of time in a c6 z06 and spent some time in 911's. To me I'd go down either of those routes 10x over rather than going down the GT-R route. That being said, I prefer my miata NA, track ratted out and up the *** of anyone that has more horsepower than i do.

p.s. gtr driver apparently also do lame things like cover their cars in 50 dollars worth of painters tape.

Not all GTRs require a ton of expensive maintenance, but beating the **** out of any car can take it's toll. And most GTR drivers don't baby them so money is spent, especially if the car is picked up second hand. Even if driven only halfheartedly, there are some reliability issues with early transmissions which can cost thousands to repair. Some interior bits are cheapish and wear more quickly than they should. I don't know much about other luxury sport/supercar platforms with respect to reliability and cost, but I can say that most of the GTR customers we build engines and transmissions for have plenty of extra cash on hand in case something goes boom.

That's not to say that they aren't reliable in a lot of cases, even highly modified. One of our most enthusiastic customers has hundreds of launches on his car (which runs a 9.4xx@148 1/4 mile) and destroys most other prepped street cars on the local road courses. It has not stranded him anywhere. His tuner (not us) is great, all of his parts are solid, and the only time he comes in is if he's broken the next weakest link.

It's an enormous step away from a Miata. Huge, heavy, and expensive, but a great performer. I would totally own one if I could afford it, but I'd keep my Miata, too.

I was given the opportunity to drive Eric Hyman's GTR at spring Nationals this year when I had some issues with my car. I gained a whole new level of respect for what those cars are capable of. This car was nowhere near stock so I have no idea how my experience would translate to a off the showroom floor car. The power was mind blowing, totally flat and could be put down anywhere. The torque is so flat that the car never stops pulling. EVER. The brakes would suck your eyeballs out of their sockets and never faded but the thing that blew me away was how well the car handled. I was expecting a car that heavy to be a pig when driven in anger but I couldn't have been more wrong. I swear the thing transitioned better than my Miata. I had never before considered the GTR as a car I would own but after driving Eric's I defiantly would.
