You want children to be better mannered? Repeal "no child left behind" and compulsory education laws.

And then require that your child maintain attendance at a school as a requisite for government aid.

And HS graduation as a requirement for voting.

As a couple that has decided to focus our energy and funds on helping younger siblings instead of having children of our own, I try to say "thank you" every now and then to my peers that are having children. The probabilities are high that their kids will turn out to be decent human beings with good foundations. They are necessary to prevent the sort of reverse natural selection that takes place in late stage developed human societies.

y8s really hit the nail on the head.

I recently watched Idiocracy again, and we're creating this horrid society around us through our fear of raising children, and letting the slobs raise their heathen. They outnumber us, they will continue to outnumber us.

The brain drain is real. Stupid parents equals stupid kids...and even more yet stupider grandkids. The best thing you can do is man up and raise some bad *** little adults.

problem 2 is that people think they can fix 10 years of bad parenting with a few whacks on the ***.

everyone in here who says parents need to discipline their kids: how about preventing the need for discipline in the first place? raise your kids in a safe, loving house and give them the best start in life. if you neglect them and don't provide them with a good childhood environment, you'll get a douchebag of a kid out of it.

be sensitive and be a mother and father. tell your kids you love them. provide for them. spoil them as babies so they develop strong emotional bonds to you. tough love damages a kid under 12 months old. it makes them antisocial and have anxiety problems that last forever.

don't be their drill sergeant.

I agree the responsibility is the parent's, but telling them to do something about it when the kid is 5 or 10 or 15 year old is like saying that changing the oil on your blown motor will fix it.

The trouble is most people today are content with being pedestrian. There's little incentive to work to be a young lord or even a boss.

All right on Matt, and I wish you the best as a parent.

It's certainly not easy. Life is frustrating, and kids compound that. People who were raised poorly can't handle life stress, much less the added stress factor of raising kids, and they get lazy.

Kids can be a beautiful experience if done right. Exactly as you are saying, lots of love, lots of talking. I get a lot of ---- for not hitting my kids, I really do. But our oldest is of the age of reason, and talking WORKS. She listens, she understands, she asks questions. The only time a kid ever needs a spanking is when it is to stop them from doing something that could actually cause them massive physical pain. If you're paying attention you can avoid these stupid situations, and those possibly maiming opportunities diminish after they hit 2.5yrs old and have a good head on them (from all your advice). I've maybe spanked our older girl twice, just enough apparently that when I tell her "STOP" now she knows it will be followed by a good explanation of how she was about to do something that could have turned out bad. Also note we don't "spank and walk away." Any time there was a spanking it was immediately followed by us sitting down, holding her, and explaining how whatever it was would have hurt etc.

Just like anything else in life, the outcome and your enjoyment depend on the level of effort you are willing to put in. Unlike anything else in life your obligation to do well at this task is an absolute. I find it appalling how so many people can be responsible for shaping another person and fail so miserably.

And yes, the first 12months are pure love. It's ridiculous to think your child needs anything besides life essentials and postive attention at this point. If you're paying attention you notice a distinction in decision making at around 18mos where it's no longer "need" driven, but where actions are actually pondered. From there to about 3.5yrs old your children need as much attention as possible by having consequences explained to them, and directed in how to make better decisions next time, and why. I cringe when I see someone bat at a baby that can barely walk. The kid has no idea, he's copying everything around him, and now his sole providers have taken to shattering everything he knows with violence.

Kids are amazing in that they soak up everything around them. Talk to a daycare worker (at a solid daycare). She'll tell you she knows exactly what kind of people every set of parents are by the actions of their kids, down to whose dad belches and laughs about it. Think about this and realize that the best way to mould them is through example. The examples given to the kids in this video is the real problem. Social norms and peer pressure only account for so much. In reality I consider it a "dilution" problem. When there is a vacuum of influence at home, what these kids see on TV, hear at school and whatnot has a large pollutionary factor on them. The best solution for pollution is dilution. I can't change what is out there for my girls to see, but I can make damn sure that it's only 5% of what they see, heavily diluted by the positive influence at home, and therefore less toxic to their moral character.

without getting to much into the cause, did you see a positive result?

I know that back when I was a kid, my old man used to hit me with his belt if I f'ed up but if I did something right, I was rewarded. I learned that way, it worked for me. I knew that whatever I did had consequences -- good or bad.

I don't know, and am torn on it.

I hear lots of accounts, and my 5yr old has recently started lying about small things to avoid admonishment. First time I've ever wanted to "beat something out of her." It only perturbs me because I want her to be able to talk to us about anything, and to always know what's going on with her. Fibbing is a direct strike against that.

I'm going to stay my course for now. My mother beat the ---- out of me. It only made me a -----up who dreamed of moving out and doing things my way, which ended up being the wrong way for a long time. It could have been that she was just a lazy beater, but deep down I know she honestly cared, and it was the only way she could show that she cared about my decision making.
