Can anyone recommend a DVD player (or game console, PC drive, whatever) that can upscale regular DVD's to 1080p? After reading this thread I it sounds like I may have to or else get bad picture quality out of my standard DVD player. A quick search on google showed some Denon stuff but I want to hear what you all recommend.

No point. The dvd players that upscale to 1080p are really friggin expensive.

You'd be better off looking for an HD DVD player. Toshiba has one for $800 that's pretty nice.

I'd wait a month until the new xbox360 with HDMI comes out, and add the hd drive. Around $~650 plus you'll want an extra controller and the rechargable batteries.

- Yes. I haven't looked into it, but probably scales to 720p or 1080i. Your tv will scale it again to its native 1080p. It may look better to have the xbox output 480p then let the tv scale to 1080p. You'll have to play around to see what works best.
- Keep them in your library. But purchase HD DVDs instead of regular DVDs in the future.

I bought myself a cheap 1080i upconverting dvd player and a nice 3' optical audio out. turns out the damn thing only had coaxial out...even though it's specs say optical...how lame. it looks pretty good compared to my "Standard" dvd player on my 32" HD CRT.

also what sucks is the PS3 wont output high def DVD over a non HDCP connection. I think it downconverts everything to 480p over, say, component.
but netflix does rent blu-ray discs if you want to go that route

The xbox 360 upconverts dvds to 1080p through the vga cable with the newest update. You should check out avs forums though to make sure that there are no problems displaying the xbox signal on the tv at that res. I know some tvs like to offset the picture by a bunch of pixels.
If I were to purchase an xbox, I'd wait until the revision comes out with a much larger hard drive and hdmi. Because of BS copyright protection protocols, copyrighted dvds and hd dvds will only be displayed at 1080p with hdmi.
It should be out next month or so. Then Halo3 comes out in November!

I wish I had something right now. I sold off my awesome pc rig at the end of the summer last year and I haven't played a videogame since. Being an ex CAL player in CS I am having serious videogame withdrawals. I don't miss it as much as I used to but I wouldn't mind having something to play for a couple hours a week. I think I wanna get a wii, not because it is "cool", but because I really wanna play the new zelda game. After that I would probably sell it off.
