i speak russian way better then i speak english. i can also understand ukrainean and belorussian but i cant speak either one. besides that im proficient in 10 programming languages if those count...

My wife is from Mexico D.F., but I spoke broken spanish before we ever met after years working as a landscape foreman. Between two years in college and speaking it at home with her, I'm now pretty darn fluent.
I found while learning that I was backwards, I could usually express myself, but had a harder time understanding others.
Learning not only the second language, but the culture of another people really opens up your eyes. Highly recommended, and all it takes is practice.
When learning by myself, I would simply write down five words each morning, and make sure to use them throughout the day.
