Default Pikes Peak international hill climb 2012

Anyone here going? I'll be up there all weekend for it, should be rad. I'll be in my miata, mariner blue, rollbar, hardtop, fmic, enkei 16" wheels, etc to recognize me. Holla if you see me! I plan on hiking around and checking out some different vantage points if I can. Will be camping at a campground nearby as well.

Not going but it's in my backyard, and the fan appreciation hootenanny is 2 blocks down the street from my office. Where are you camping? How long are you here? We can gay it up in our matching cars

Hillclimb is July 8th, 6th/7th is FanFest and random stuff in town and on the mountain. First year it's fully paved, too, so I'd guess that the record set last year is going to fall.

Hmm, my brother actually got the spot reserved - so I'll update you later with that.

Sounds like a plan though, never seen another boosted miata IRL so that sounds badass. I'd love to check out your car. My brother will be up there in his sr20 swapped s14, and my buddy with his subaru lesbo wagon will be coming as well. We could go drive some nice roads or something. I'll PM you with some more details when I get them ironed out and my number so we can get together.

Maybe not worth coming all the way from MS, but I'm pretty excited to be up there the first year its 100% paved. New records will be set.

I know. It's still a race, and races are cool. It's just not ultra-cool like it was before, and any "new records" will have an asterisk after them in my opinion. I'm glad the 10 minute barrier was broken while it was still partially unpaved.

Cool. Definitely some great roads in the area and I'm always down for a run.

Postponed
Pikes Peak Hill Climb postponed | pikes, hill, postponed - WALDO CANYON FIRE - Colorado Springs Gazette, CO

Tom Osborne, chairman of the board of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, is clear on this point:

The 2012 edition of the race will happen, despite being postponed by the Waldo Canyon Fire.

“We’re going to conduct a 90th running,” Osborne said Wednesday night. “There’s no question about that. It’s just like a baseball game that’s been postponed. We’re going to make it up.”

Osborne is not sure of the date of the 2012 race, but said he expects the Hill Climb will run “early September, late August.”

The fire is still going strong. A big chunk of a neighborhood on the NW side of town burned to the ground last night. I was listening to a live stream of the fire/medic radio and it was unbelievably tense...the area is still burning 24hrs later. My house is about 3-4 miles away, across a major interstate from the closest fires, so I'm safe at this point. But thousands of people (including my gf's daughter) have been evacuated from their homes locally. I've never seen anything like it, and I was here a decade ago when the Hayman fire was burning (that ended up being 137K acres). It is truly surreal.

I drove (unknowingly) within a half mile of the most intense fire yesterday, right as the evacuation was happening. I'll post some pics from that drive when I get a break from work.

I might be down for it too, but I'll be hiking in. No way I am at the mercy of those fools for road control and I'm not paying jack for it either. Last year we sat in a parking lot for 4 hours before they let us out to merge with traffic at all. No exaggeration. It was just decided that we would be the last lot to leave I guess. It was far worse than past years. I like cops, they have a tough job and I respect that. But we had two of the biggest douchebags POS powertrip bitter because they can't get laid ------- cops ever. They sat at the exit, and did not move. They were unaffected by polite rational questions as to WTF was going on.

This was after we watched a biker get a rear wheel off on one corner, shoot across the road, and land headfirst into a pile of rocks. We could not move him/do CPR because it was obvious if we did he was dead. So basically we kept him still and ran about ineffectually for 15 goddamn minutes trying to find a way to contact magical disappearing race crew/medics. We managed to get a cell signal and call 911 for the guy. I have no clue how he made it. Those morons took their sweet time getting to him and figuring out WTF was going on.

"Hugh Bill, there were 4 riders in a tight group 3 miles back at station 6, now there's 3 riders, and they went by 2 minutes ago. Maybe we should check on that."

The people that run that race are idiots. Its a real shame, it was a lot better that way back in the day.
