I guess it just means I've really gotta dial in the ammo. Theoretically though, accuracy shouldn't suffer at all. There'll be a bit of speed penalty, but I'm only talking about 500yds or so with 160+gr match bullets.

A 178gr Amax should get 2600fps from an 18" barrel, which puts it subsonic around 900yds.

For hunting this year, I'd already decided I was going to get away from the 168gr Gamekings I've been using and try some lighter faster stuff. 130gr Nosler Ballistic Tips or Sierra ProHunters at like 3000fps... now we're talking.

If I do get a semi-auto .308, my plinkin' ammo goal will be to find the cheapest acceptable repeatability... probably start with a 1000ct buy of 147gr pulls and see what that gets me.

Awe man, I really hope not. If anything happens there, it'll only mean I'm gone longer. I really want to make it back for the opening of rifle season. Yeah, yeah... get back to the wife and kids too I guess.

Sam, I thought you might like to check out this guys web page. I'll link the 308 page (watch video at bottom of page), but please check out his site. To say that his "knowledge base" section is exhaustive would be an understatement.

He is a very good guy, even answering an email with very detailed replies.

Be safe.

Edit: the link.

.308 Winchester (7.62 NATO)
Holy ******* WOWZERS! That was an amazing read. I just learned more about bullets than I know about my own crank.

He says my current 165gr Gamekings are just fine for my needs... but definitely going to grab some other brands:
Both the 165 grain GameKing and GameKing hollow point are tough bullets. Both expand readily on light bodied game but kills are often delayed, especially at impact velocities below 2400fps, differing somewhat from the Hornady and Speer 165 grain bullets which are more flexible. Nevertheless, the GameKing bullets have their strengths and when used on game weighing between 80 and 100kg and up to 150 kg as a safe limit, the GameKing bullets deal a traumatic blow. The subtleties of this can be difficult to explain but for those who have hunted game averaging 100kg (220lb), there may be some familiarity with the challenge of finding a bullet that is neither too soft, too stout nor too light or too heavy.
I still want some 130gr stuff for the lighter/closer critters... and to increase my reloading knowledge... would love to see 3000fps+ on the Chrony.

Well, I was going to do a lightweight AR as my next build, but now that the ATF has ruled that a pistol "brace" does not reclassify the weapon as an SBR:

Lower can say whatever it wants to say, but if it is indeed a 5.56, it can only be a 5.56 once.

After you fire the first round of 5.56 out of that pistol, you will need to disassemble and reassemble in order to fire the second round.

Nope, look up the brand name. They built a bufferless .223 setup.

I thought the same thing, then referenced the company.

Impressed.

Also, my "need" for a .450 bushmaster or .50 beowulf in a pistol format just went out the window.

Ohio just legalized rifles w/straight walled cartridges for deer hunting.

Rifles will have the same 3 round limit as shotguns though. Pistols will still be round unlimited.

I do believe I'll be stepping up my game on the hunter orange this year.

Are we talking .44mag lever-action or what?

That thing is a useless piece of ****. There is no possible use for one other than a toy you'll try once, realize what a turd it is, then put it on Armslist for the next sucker. I compare it to guys who don't carry but swear that a Judge will be the ultimate EDC and I'm a moron because I have a Glock.

At least try on one at an LGS somewhere before you waste your money over the internet.

I rented one at the local gun shop one day. I was NOT impressed. I thought it would be like this (it wasn't):

WOW, I shot the new AK-74 today (as well as the new AK-47 and my 16.5" Mosin). No wonder I see all the Ruskies carrying them (AK-74) on the current news reports from Crimea. What a wonderful weapon! Kicked about the same as my .22LR Ruger 10/22. I'll be selling the AK-47 soon. No desire to ever shoot another one while I have the 74.

Oh, I also shot my buddy's new $1800 Colt AR. I'm not saying it was worth $1000 more than my PSA but it is a beautiful rifle and shot great.

Edit:
Also got to use my new rifle case (comes with two #5's and one #7):

I didn't buy mine from the website but got it from walmart.com instead (ordered online and picked it up a few days later). Holds both new AKs (one on each side of the divider). I think I paid like $33 for it. It was a little tight due to the length of the muzzle break on the 74 but it does zip up. Used another $24 Walmart tactical bag to carry the Mosin and five mags for the AK's.

I've heard that they're extremely loud and borderline useless. I have visions of keeping one as a "truck gun." Then I take off my 5.11 tactical pants, masterbate to guns & ammo one more time, and rock myself to sleep.

Also, anyone ever shot at a GSSF match? I'm attending my first one this weekend.

Anyone have any experience dealing with these guys? Firearm Parts & Accessories | Military Surplus | Numrich Gun Parts

For more years that I care to admit, I've been trying off and on to find a complete replacement stock set and nosecap with hardware for my Lee Enfield No1 MKIII. Numrich has stock sets listed, but they are sold out. They have the individual parts, but none of the finishes match, unless you really like cosmoline. Alternately, if anyone happens to know of a site that might stock (ba-dum, tiss!) these things I'm all ears. About a decade ago I can remember seeing ads in The Sportsmans Guide for new/unissued milsurp British or Australian stock sets for these rifles but those seem to have dried up years ago. I'd like to get the ol' girl cleaned up for her 100th birthday.

Bandwidth on the boat won't let me open that site, but I always turn my buddies to SARCO when it comes to surplus.
www.sarcoinc.com

If I remember right, their website isn't the easiest to navigate. I highly recommend calling for something that specific.

Thanks Sam Sarco looks like they have stuff but you are right, the website is atrocious. I've got an email in to Numrich currently to see if they have enough matching parts to get me a complete stock set. If that does not work out, I'll give Sarco a call.

WTF is going on in this thread??? Answer: NOTHING!

This is atrocious. This is unacceptable. This is freaking 'Merica you guys!!!

So, since I've been out here on USS Bataan, I've bought 300ct of 175gr Matchkings for the cheapest price I've ever seen... and put the sweatwork into a very nice DPMS-style precision .308 build that is totally out of budget no matter how much tax-free I get.

I also found out that the PSA website hates the server on the ship and won't let me add anything to the cart. Between Fathers Day and my birthday, I should be able to order everything I want except the barrel and receivers so they're at home waiting when cruise is over. I totally want a Mega Maten upper/lower, but they're tough to come by and expensive.

What I'm really waiting for is PSA's promised release of their AR-10's... hoping for a stripped upper/lower combo in the $400 range, but probably gonna be a bit more. Oh well, if they only sell complete guns to start, it may be a Mega build.

Anyways... don't let this thread sit idle for longer than a month ever again!
