Nice find there Sam!!!
Trip to the range today with my brother was a lot of fun. Spent 3 hours blasting away at a couple phone books. Forgot to take a picture of the bullets we recovered from a 1500 page book. Specifically wanted to actually dial in my Primary Arms M4 red dot along with the irons on the same rifle, get the scope zero'd with .223 on my DPMS, and zero the new Simmons scope for the Savage.
Bought a Milsurplus Matech flip-up adjustable rear sight from some place online. Installed it and set a mechanical zero on both the Matech and front sight post before going to the range.
Printed out a 25/300 meter zero target and set it at 25 meters, sat cross legged on the ground because all the benches were full. Fired off 3 rounds using only iron sights and checked through a spotting scope. Mechanical zero was pretty much dead on. A bench was free so I moved my target in front of it and set my 2 MOA dot in the middle of my front sight post and fired off 3 rounds. All 3 dead center. Good tight group from bench rest, not a bad group seated on the ground. Perfect co-witness between the Matech and the PA M4.
Then I loaded up a Hornady V-Max into the same target around the 9 O'Clock position and this was our result:
V-Max is the large dirty hole, the smaller ones by my thumb were 55gr FMJ's..

Not a hater, but I don't see the point... kinda like calling a NASCAR Camry a "stock car"... swap out the barrel, stock, trigger assembly, and do how many hundreds of dollars of custom work to the receiver?
Sure, it'll be a crazy accurate 10/22, but that's like having really cool LED interior door lights.

I just bought 23 boxes of 55grHP... works out to $103 (w/free shipping over $99) for 460rds. I'm, pretty sure this is the cheapest I've seen .223 in the past year, and ABSOLUTELY the cheapest hollow-point .223 I've seen in many years.

Little over a year ago Cabela's was selling both the 55gr JHP and FMJ's for $3.89/box in stores. I bought the most I could afford and haven't seen them under $5/box since.
I've run about 1000 rounds of that through my recent AR build and have never had any kind of ammo related malfunction. Totally sold on TulAmmo, which Cabela's rebranded Herter's.

Ok guys, abuse me. I've got my lowers, stocks, trigger groups, etc figured out but I need some help on uppers.
Upper
A lightweight 16" barrel and would prefer a mid length gas system. Any to recommend? I'm liking what I'm seeing over at DSA. This is to be a lightweight blaster, not a target rifle. Minute-of-squirrel is good enough for me. I've given serious thought to a carbine length 14" but I'm not sure I want to deal with trying to explain myself in the current political climate.
Rate of twist
I'm seeing 1:7, 1:8, 1:9 (though the 1:7 seem to be 20" barrels.) I know that I've read in theory more twist for longer (heavier?) bullets, but is there a trade off in barrel length? What rate do I want? I want a rate that will be versatile enough to shoot anything I pick up off the shelf. I would imagine that will consist of 55 & 62 grain Tula, steel case and surplus ammo 90% of the time. With your collective practical experience, what would you recommend?
History: back when I owned a Mini14 in the 90s, I bought a LOT (500-600 rounds?) of Black Hills 60, 62 or 68gr molly coated ammo only to find out that it didn't shoot for dick in my Mini because of twist rates. The Black Hills worked famously in my friends HBAR, so he bought the balance of it off me.
I'm also planning out a 20" A2/A3~ish clone, but that's more questions for another time. I'd love to find a Colt upper but have yet to see one for a decent price. Prancing ponys seem to fetch a premium no matter where you look.

Check out PSA. Their uppers are 100% mil spec, chrome lined barrel made by FN, 1 in 7 twist (can shoot bigger weight rounds), shot peened chrome BCG, etc.

Fireindc: I've read good things about PSA products, not so great about their shipping times! $249.99 is cheap, but its a carbine length gas system. Description says USA made FN barrel. I also had no idea FN had a shop in SC. Their machine shop listing makes me happy in my pants. It's been a while since I was in a machine shop. I was actually looking at something more like this: PSA 16" Mid-length A2 Premium Black Friday Upper - Black Friday Upper Sale - AR-15 It's another $30 but its pretty much exactly what I was looking for.
Elesjuan: I know, we've discussed DSA in the past! Don't you have one of those $240 uppers on your lightweight? I was actually looking at this guy: DSA ZM4 A3 Receiver, 16" Barrel, Mid-Length Gas System-D S Arms $10 more and midlength gas system.
And yes, that's the 20" I was looking at for the A3 build.
Both claim to be all USA components, so their goes that. I just wish they would put real weights on these things! I have all the tools to build an upper but I don't think I can build one cheaper than these guys are selling them assembled!

Yup, shipping sucks, product is supposed to be top notch. I'll let you know what I think when I get it in, its my first AR but my buddies have colts and S&W ars i'll be comparing it to.
Totally missed the part where you were looking for mid length, but theres plenty of those on their site as well.
I'll update this thread when i receive a product.. it's been about a month now with no word..

JUST got confirmation that my PSA complete rifle shipped yesterday. Ordered on 11/1, supposed to arrive 12/3 . That is honestly not that horrible, considering the holiday and the fact that they state 15 business days on their site, and it had been exactly that (minus the holiday).
PSA 16'' M4 Premium Carbine - Palmetto State Armory - Rifles - Firearms
I'm going to order some windowed pMags for it now, anyone have any other suggestions for magazines?
Any other things i should upgrade right away on this carbine? I've always had AK's, so this is my first AR. I'm talking to you experienced AR owners. I was thinking about getting a nicer grip for it, but i know so little. An optic will come soon, but I need to get my practice in with the irons first anyways. Getting a sling as well, thinking a 2 point because i like to do a lot of hiking and might bring the AR.
Also picking up 1k rounds of 5.56 to break her in good. I'm excited.
