BAZINGA!!!! Craigslist is awesome. Just scored 3 brand new Glock OEM G19 15rd mags for $20ea... guy had 3 more, might call back in a few days and see if he still has them. I've got 6 now, and 9 isn't a feng-shui number.

Walked through Walmart yesterday. Their ammo "aisle" consists of just one double-wide glass case... approx 5ft wide by 5 high. They had a few boxes of 20ga, .243, 7mm-08, and one box of .300winmag.

The only pistol ammo in the whole case was 5 100rd Winchester white-box packs of .357sig... and that's it. Nothing else. I thought it was funny.

Yup, only paid $60 total for these!!! Suck on it panic buyers!
For comparison... $35ea plus shipping at Kesslering!

Picked up a brand new Saiga in 7.62x39 with some mags and other goodies. Collecting parts for conversion to the standard AK setup.

That's a fun project. Here's my old Saiga conversion thread. Sold it a while back to start building an AR.

That's a nice writeup there mgeoffriau, better than half of those available on the saiga forums! I've already got the bullet guide installed, just waiting for the FCG from Carolina Shooter Supply and then I'll get to drilling away at rivets next week. I got the Warsaw length stock as I am short AND love having my rifle as close to my body as possible (within reason).

What were your exact criteria for selling it to configure your AR? I quite like how the AK shoots, it kicks fluidly and with a smoothness I did not expect.

I'll post another pic with the completed product.

BTW I'm using your posts on AR build information to motivate and guide my roommate into building his own. He wants one now but I told him to build his own and love it instead of panic buying some variant.

I like that the AK can be built in a cave by draconian warlocks and rather enjoy the way mine shoots in particular. Ran 100 rounds through it over the weekend and it functions rather well. Very satisfying to see the rifle function well after building it myself.

Discovered that tapco receiver flats are crap. Already knew that, but reaffirmed it. Rails needed some grinding at the magazine support because it was smashing the feed lips. Full magazine would feed flawless for 28 rounds then fail to feed the 29th and 30th rounds. The Tapco G2 fire control group is actually pretty nice, better break than my DPMS trigger in the AR. Top of the hammer needs some grinding because it seems to drag on the bottom of the bolt carrier a little, which could cause some cycling issues. It catches enough that you can **** the bolt and the hammer will hold the bolt open.... I blame the tapco receiver for that. Plan to change out another 922r part to be compliant while using non-us made magazines. Plan to replace the piston since my kits came with one, going to build my own skeleton style stock, and replace the handguards with something else not made by crapco.

That being said, I also quite enjoy how much more "refined" building an AR is. The ease of assembly on some parts makes it a lot more fun to work on. There is something to be said about changing out your fire control group in 45 seconds, though...

In other news, Discovered over the weekend my Cousin has 190 acres on his property less than an hour from my house. Looked it up on google maps and discovered due to the distances, layout of other houses in the area, and elevation I can safely setup a minimum of 700 yard shooting post to the creek bed down the middle of his property. Sure the hell can't make a 700 yard shot yet, but I'd like to work my way up to it.

I liked how the AK shot but not how it handled, if that makes sense...the AR's ergonomics are just on a completely different level. No canting the rifle or reaching underneath to charge it. Vastly superior options for iron sights and optics (particularly mounting options). Easier mag changes. Lighter ammo (though obviously you lose some wallop). Nearly infinite options for almost every part on the rifle, including the ability to change uppers (and therefore calibers) with just a couple of pins.

Granted, some of those issues have been addressed by the better AK builders, but I'm not interested in dropping $1500 on a Krebs. Prices are different now of course, but at the time I figured if I got the itch for another AK I'd just look for a straight WASR for $450 or whatever.

I love my wasr, but I have never shot another AK. It shoots where I point. I'm not nearly a good enough shot to do any paper tests on grouping consistency. Mine didn't have any of the common downfalls such as canted sight or loose mag well. On a 12"x12" target I can get 5-7 of 20 on target. I only go out shooting 2-3 times a year. I plan on practicing a lot more when ammo prices come back down now that I have a place only 25min from home. I had to drive almost an hour before.

Also in the process of building my AR. Have a complete lower and 2 different uppers on order. Trying to decide what one I want to keep and cancel the other.

Wait. Am I interpreting that correctly? On a 12" x 12" target, only 5-7 shots out of 20 fired were actually on the target?

What distance were you shooting at? Using just iron sights, I assume?

On a separate note, I ordered a couple of components recommended by Mark over the weekend.

I did leave out every bit of pertinent information possible didn't I...

Iron sights, 100 yards, 12"x12" target hit 6-7 of 20 fired.

From the shoulder, that's pretty good... from a rest, I'd recommend having somebody critique your body position, trigger control, and breathing. A good shooter should be able to ping a 12x12 gong at 100yds all day long with just about any rifle.

I've had a very small amount of actual "training" for shooting rifles... that is to say, once a year, I hang out with some guys who warm up at 1000yds. This crew has taught me a lot, and every year I get better and better with my shooting. This past year, I shot a 3-shot 7" group at 1000yds with a 7mm WSM. My buddy followed up my shooting with a 4" group, same gun, same winds, same ammo... he's just that much better on the gun.

Point is, somebody who really "knows" what they're doing will take apart every little detail of your technique after watching you take just a few shots. Some guys wonder for years why their $3k guns and $2k scopes only shoot MOA at 500yds and blame the reloads when they can't hit a barn at 1000yds... cause they never learned how to shoot.

Iron sights, 100 yards, on a rest, I can do a 4" groups all day with my Garand. I can't SEE 1000 yds.
