I prefer my $50.00 Aimpoint knockoff myself (made by Primary Arms) which runs off a single AA battery. Performed a test and left it on full brightness with the battery it came with and it lasted 5 1/2 weeks.



Can't make up my mind on anything and have recently removed my red-dot from the rifle and gone back to old irons. Bought a couple milsurplus Matech 600 meter iron sights from a local message board and have really grown to like it.

Another vote here for an Eotech. I came from a 1-4x and switched over to the Eotech. Unless the local 3 gun format changes, I won't go back. Huge field of view, two eyes open and also the circle dot allows mutiple zeros for different distances. You could always add a magnifier later on if you need more reach.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I'm definitely leaning towards Eotech over the Aimpoint at the moment.

Although my buddy did just get a Primary arms 3x and said it's a quality piece, so i would consider them as well. This is the one he got, it has great reviews most everywhere.

Do you guys think there is a real downside to having a 3x sight all the time for a 16" ar? This would be my go to defense weapon after my pistol.

The biggest piece of advice I received and didn't follow was to pay attention to eye relief. An eyepiece with a forgiving eye relief/eye box will make a huge difference all around. I don't think I would put a fixed 3x on a defensive gun especially if the eye relief sucks. You might be okay on a rest with a sucky eye relief, but try and move with said suck and you will hate it.

If funds were unlimited for me, I would have a rifle for every discipline. One for defense, one for mid range and one for long range. I don't, so I had to find a good compromise.

I'll second eye-relief, absolutely something to look out for. Maybe check out the Vortex 1-4x24? That would IMO resolve your defensive and midrange with one single rifle. Option number two would be a detachable fixed magnifier with an aimpoint/eotech/whatever for defensive and midrange...


I can't personally say enough good things about my Primary Arms M4, and at $100.00 retail you can't beat it with a wooden spoon...

Primary arms also sells magnifiers at a reasonable price. I have their standard 3x and their long eye relief 3x. I really like the LER 3x. Keep in mind if you go the route of a magnifier, plan ahead because you will run out of rail space if you don't plan.

I also have a PA M4 clone and recommend it as well. The only thing I don't like about red dots is the single aiming point (duh). Anything other than the zero will require you to hold high or low.

I have that exact Primary Arms 3x on my gun, and am very seriously considering ditching it in favor of iron sights for several reasons.

First, my AR is a tool. This is the weapon I will go to when I need a short-medium range weapon outside the home. This gun will take me block-to-block as required to make it to my car, defend the neighborhood, or general urban defense. The 3x scope off a front rest gives me a bit more confidence outside 200yds... but inside 200yds, I think the iron sights are just as effective. Just about the only red-dot I would consider in the future is the Aimpoint PRO with Magpul BUIS.

I thought I liked the idea of a 3x red-dot until I really started thinking about what I needed this gun to do. I don't envision engagements on man-sized targets outside of 100yds, and 200yds would be absolute max. Anything farther than that, and I'd better be running away rather than shooting. I've actually just decided right now typing this that I'm going to go take the optic off and start training iron-sites only until I can save up for the Aimpoint.

If you're choosing an optic based on a mix of self-defense, range use, hunting, plinking, and general noise-making... I'd argue that you should probably re-evaluate and come to the conclusion that you need multiple weapons. I DO NOT compromise anymore with tools designed to save my life.

Count me in the Faimpoint M4 + Magpul MBUS combo group. Cheap and it works. My only problem is that I don't get a good cowitness at the moment, I need a small riser for the Faimpoint.

I have the PA 3x G2 magnifier and am fairly impressed with the eye relief on it. Wanting to sell or trade it for a different model, I didn't realize the mistake until after it was in my hands. With the M4 on a standard co-witness riser and the center mounted magnifier there's not enough room for an iron rear sight. Contacted PA a few weeks ago asking if all the standard mounting hardware for Aimpoint M4's fit the PAM4 and was told they do so I'm thinking about upgrading to a cantilever forward mount on the M4 and trade the side folding center mounted magnifier with a quick-disconnect fixed end mount long eye relief 3x.

Kinda funny Sam mentions going back to irons as I recently removed the red dot from the rifle before the last time we went shooting again. Was a very good exorcise to practice without any kind of optic!

You're right, for the most part neither have I. That's a legit deal for the magazines alone honestly, pre-hysteria Polish mags were fetching around $30 a piece.. Just wish those were Yugo mags, I'd buy 2 of those 'kits.'

I've got some sources for more pre-hysteria priced AK mags if you're in need or want...

I just wish I could find 2 frickin LPKs.

Bravo actually shipped my above lightweight yesterday, so now my brother an I both need LPKs to finish our builds (lightweight is for him.)

After that I want to build a 20" A2 clone, or maybe an A4 if I can find a decent price on a KAC M5 RAS and an ACOG. And get married and sell my rotrex and finish hoarding parts for a turbo install...
