This was from Saturday... nice west Texas 10pt from 340yds. Not a monster, but perfect for the kids playroom.

Gun is an LAPrecision (William Roscoe) in 6.5Creedmore wearing Nightforce.

This.

I have a friend that is a tactitard type gun owner, you know... the type that wears DCUs that he picked up at a military surplus store for 60 bucks, and "tactical" gear from online catalogs. Has never been in the military.

He was recently hyping up about his newly purchased, custom AR styled "DMR" (as he loves to keep repeating) chambered in .338 with specialized magazines and **** for 7 or 8k and the cheapest rounds being $3 a round... when we went shooting he too, was pissed off that my other buddy's $400 dollar savage deer rifle (i think it was also a .300wm, or maybe a .308) with nothing but a synthetic stock, barska scope and bi-pod... while the decked out AR had all the bells and whistles for "idk wtf im doing lol, but it looks cool" or the latest trend "zombie" scenario.

Then there I am with a 0 dollar Mosin nagant and $180 800 round tin of russian ww2 suprlus shooting, hitting targets, without a care in the world... with some nice grouping as well.

I feel the same way. Every time I shoot my Mosin I'm so happy I feel like I am getting away with something. I paid $125 for it and spent a day stripping and staining the wood (laminated stock). I clean it with a water hose and WD-40. There hasn't been a single day at the range where someone did not comment on how nice it looks. I put a long eye relief scope on it but it only lasted two days (too much fun shooting with iron sights). If I ever screw it up I'll throw it in the trash and grab another one out of the crate.

I'm not sure what kind of grouping I could get with it but my blind *** can hit a beer can shooting offhand at 100 yards (bayonet fixed of course!). That's good enough for me.

That does it... Next time I see a sale on Mosins I am going to pick myself up one. Maybe two...

It's easy to find Mosins... but a sale, probably not more than $10 off... get one now and be done with it.
Russian 1891/30 7.62x54R Mosin Nagant Rifle
Russian M91/30 Mosin Nagant Rifle, Bolt Action 7.62x54R - Our Most Popular Rifle - C&R Eligible

Deals are not to be found anymore in LGS's for these since they get them from the same dozen of so importers that we all have access to. You need to get your 03FFL if you want to buy one of these... the cost of the license almost pays for itself the first time you use it ($30 for 3 years)... and a lot of places (Midway/Brownells) will extend you dealer pricing on all guns (even non C&R eligible) if you have one.

This page walks you through getting your 03 FFL Curio and Relic Collector License... I've posted it before, takes about 15 minutes to do the forms... just get one, thanks me later: How to acquire your C&R FFL license

i'm contemplating moving from pa to chicago.
illinois does not offer reciprocity for pa's concealed carry.
i understand chicago may even be different than the whole state of illinois, similar to how philly is different than the whole state of pa.

i own a shotgun. in pa, you don't need a permit.

what are the gun laws in chicago?

Only criminals can own guns in cook county.

Anyone have any first hand experience with the Burris Tac 30 1-4x or Vortex Viper PST 1-4x? Looking for a low power variable for my 6.8 SPC AR.

I've handled both, I think the PST is the better value (prefer the HS model). Personally, I like 1.5-5 Leupolds VX-3s for their better glass and capped turrets. The need for a "true" 1x is really over-emphasized by elevator-clearing mall-ninjas. What is your intended use for the scope?

You might want to also check out the SWFA low-power variables.

You are behind.
This summer, IL had it's ban on carry declared unconstitutional. The resulting legislation that is a watered down "shall issue" law, but is HUGE for the state. The package of laws also eliminated "local pre-emption" laws... meaning that Cook County is no longer special. There is no longer a handgun registration requirement or permitting scheme within the city. The whole state is under the same rules now, despite the repeated attempts by various alderman to push for "specialness" in their districts, which are instantly threatened with lawsuits and then go nowhere.

You still have to get an IL state FOID (Firearms Owners ID Card) in order to purchase or possess firearms. New arrivals to the state have a grace period to get their FOID... there's more rules and crap, but it's not hard, just a pain.

The latest news is that the State Police will start taking applications in January for CCW. Currently, the state does not reciprocate in any way... but it is expected that some states will accept IL CCW's when they start issuing them (like Cali).

IL is still behind the curve when it comes to owners rights, but it's a helluva lot better than it used to be, and 6 months from now when people actually start receiving their CCW's, it should be smoother sailing.

Agreed on the capped turrets. I don't plan to spin turrets on what is essentially a fairly short range rifle. I run VX-3 3.5-10s on all of my hunting rifles an have had good luck.

Honestly this gun/scope is kind of a toy so it'll get used mostly for the range and I guess also potentially for home protection. If I ever find some hogs (of the porcine variety) I might use this rifle but I reach for a bolt action for most of my hunting needs and now living in OH cant hunt much with my rifles anyways. I would like to try some "3 gun like" shooting which is why I was interested in the true 1x.

You are behind <G>. I Midway cancelled their 03 discounts.

FWIW, I don't think the money I have saved was worth getting in the program. I'm not sure when my license expires but I will not renew it. Keeping records on all the C&R weapons you own, buy, or sell sucks.

From Midway:

Over time, our industry and business have changed dramatically. In order to offer great Customer service and low prices, we must become increasingly efficient and focused. Therefore, on January 1, 2014, we are inviting all of our dealer Customers to become retail Customers.

While it may not sound like that is a positive change, it really is. As time has passed, the separation between dealer and retail pricing has narrowed to the point where the prices are predominantly the same. Dealer Customers are also excluded from taking advantage of promotional codes and the Free Shipping available on thousands of products. These restrictions are not in place for retail Customers, which frequently makes overall costs for retail Customers lower than those for dealer Customers.

Many of our previous dealer Customers have already recognized the benefits of becoming retail Customers and have made the switch. We’re confident you will be pleased with this change as well. The change to your account will be seamless to you on January 1, so there is no need for you to take any action. You will no longer need to update your FFL on file, and if you are tax exempt, we will continue to honor that status.

Please know that everything we do is intended to be in the very best interest of our Customers, and that we really appreciate your business.

Got two new revolvers this week (none of the pictures are original):

#1 - EAA Windicator 357 Mag to replace the one with the buggered barrel. It has bad machining on the muzzle like the "good" one of the pair so I am assuming that is what they all look like.

#2 - My grandfathers US Army S&W 1917 (manufactured in 1918 per serial number). Grandpa had cut the barrel down to carry it in his back pocket decades ago and dad replaced it. Maybe grandpa was going for the Indy look:

Full length:

Ammo 45 auto rim ammo is $1.50 per round so I'll have to buy some moon clips like the picture and shoot ACP.

Uh yeah. I've never known anyone who bothered to shoot .45 auto rim. Moonclips and ACP is the way to go.

Fabulous deal on Nikon Monarchs if you're in the market. These are an unbelievable value in a medium-magnification hunting scope. In fact, at $289, the 4-16x42 is a ******* fantastic value.

Stripped lowers for $50 from PSA. Anderson Manufacturing is a respected maker and these have trigger guards. If nothing else, they would make fantastic "tuck away" pieces. I wouldn't wait.
