I started the project three months ago (yes, I am a little slow) when I was home for 6 weeks recovering from hernia surgery.

I finally finished my Mosin Scout project. I finished the stock with Boiled Linseed Oil and added a 3-9x32 long eye relief scope. I caught hell removing the rear sight (FWIW, my wife's grandfather fabricated the brass hammer):

I think she looks pretty good (I have not shot her yet). The barrel has been shortened from 28" to 16.25":

I ordered 1000 Wolf Gold for $290 (with mil-surp ammo can) yesterday. Brass, boxer and M193 specs.

nice work, though Jeff Cooper might be rolling in his grave with the bipod and lack of shooting sling.

What is the final weight? how is the balance with that much barrel missing?

The bipod is so I can get a good picture (even though the pictures are shitty) and there is no sling on it at this point because of the difficulty of moving the sling attachment. I wanted to get the rifle finished last night and didn't have time to do the sling. The sling and barrel band springs are the hardest thing to do on these projects (it took me over two hours to move the spring). I'm pretty sure the bipod will be removed. I pulled it off my other Obrez but it does make it easy to display and photograph.

The balance is absolutely fantastic on the one I built without a scope so I am hoping that the balance will be as nice on these. Yes, it feels nice now but I will know more as I am shooting it off hand. The other rifle is a great shooter and didn't lose any accuracy when I cut it down. I built this one for use on a 200 yard range where I cannot see the target without optics.

I think, by definition, a scout rifle shout not have a bipod anyways. It's still just awkward-enough looking to actually look pretty cool. You need to take a night-time shot of the muzzle-blast.

And so it begins... the Black Friday craziness is already in effect.

Stevens 320 Security Pump - 12 GA, 18.5" Barrel
The cheapest I've previously seen this gun is $149. PSA wants $17 shipping, which is their normal shipping price for a long-gun... then $20 for your FFL, puts this in your hand for $137. UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE. If you don't already have a 12ga pump for HD... what are you waiting for?

My Colt AR friend showed me this video last night. I won't be buying any but it looked pretty interesting going through the water balloon.

You shoot someone with that kind of round, and the media will crucify you.

That is what I told him. I heard some good advice one time. Ask a cop what round they shoot (manufacture, grain, etc) and buy that round for self defense. Seemed like a good way to do it to me. I've also heard to keep the box and receipt. I thought that was overkill but it couldn't hurt to show that you've had the same rounds sitting in the weapon for 10 years. Takes away a lot of the premeditation aspect.

Updated ammo sales report (does anyone care?):

I've pretty much shut down at this point. I have 5000 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag going out on Monday and that will leave me with only one box (750 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity). I have a bunch of stuff on backorder (40,000 rounds of Golden Bullet comes to mind) and I will either cancel it or horde it. The profitability of selling ammo online is done. It was a good 2-3 year run while it lasted. Things have drastically changed over the past month. I'm not sure what triggered it but sales are over.

I care. I basically stopped shooting for the last 2~3 years because it was not worth my cash, time or effort to try to obtain ammo. I'm not going to get up at 4am and camp at the Walmart with the other jackasses to get 2 boxes of .22LR or 5.56. Ammo was hard enough to come by in CA before things went to **** so at this point I'm just glad to hear that supply is starting to catch up with demand. I would guess that by next spring/summer after the hoarders have restocked over the winter that pricing and availability will get a lot better and we'll be looking at a surplus. Until then, I can and will continue do without.

Shuiend, I saw this the other day and it reminded me of you:

$330 is not a bad deal for the gun itself, seeing as they are over $600 something finished.

I know what you mean. Even though I was not having a huge problem getting ammo it was worth too much for me to shoot it. I could buy a brick of .22lr for $30 (outrageous compared to the $17 it used to cost) but I could not bring myself to shoot it when I knew I could sell that brick for $100. That means it was actually costing me $100 for a day at the range. Every time I pulled the trigger my cheap *** could hear a "cha-ching" from a cash register. It drove me nuts so I just stopped shooting. I bought three more 10/22 ten round mags the other day (and one of those tri-mag holders - have yet to use it so no range report here) and I'm ready to dust off the rifles and get back out there.

Great deal on top-quality rail system. You can get an MI or UTG cheaper for just the tube, but by the time you add all the rails, it's more than this... and I'm a huge fan of Ares Armor.

I have not been shooting in nearly 2 years due to ammo availability. I won't camp out for ammo or pay outrages prices online. When CCI-minimags get back down to $7 for 100 rounds at Walmart, I will start shooting again.

The rifle kit looks awesome. When I have spare cash and time I might pick up something like that to tinker with.

It's almost there... my LGS has crates of Aguila Hypers and CCI Standard for $40/500... you're just a penny/rd away. Plenty of reports daily from all over my usual threads about dudes finding bulk packs in Walmarts that have been dry forever. My buddy came across 1000rds of M-22 around 3pm at a Walmart here in Chesapeake that the counter-guy said had been sitting there since yesterday morning. It's going to be over soon.

So... I had a $100 prepaid CC laying around and scored a PSA 16" midlength barrel, a 6.8spc D&H mag, and a DC kit for $99.47 shipped.
16" Mid-length 5.56 NATO 1/9 A2 Profile Non Chrome Lined Barrel
This is for a beater upper and I'm trying to stay cheap. The barrel is certainly not one of their FN ones, but for $75 for a mid-length 1/9... can't go wrong as long as it eats my plinking handloads. Also scored a Magpul mid-length MOE handguard on the AR15.com EE for $25 shipped.

Did some trigger work on the new Mosin today. I now have a lighter/smoother trigger on it than I do on the AR.

FWIW, I've been turning down a lot of $0.08 CCI Mini-Mag.

I've primarily been shooting three Mosins. The first was a laminate stock that I refinished. It has really horrible "Sticky Mosin Bolt". I've done a ton of work to it and have not been able to help it much. Lubrication seems to make it better but my mods have not for some reason. The second (my original Obrez project) had a much nicer bolt and the trigger was fine so I didn't touch anything. The recent scout rifle project had just about the worst trigger I have ever seen on a rifle. No, let me restate that. It had by far the worst trigger I have ever seen on anything. I had not played with a Mosin trigger until today because even though they suck I really didn't need to. The scout rifle was so bad that I wanted to do something to it before taking it to the range. I used the video below to help with the trigger and I am really happy with the results. I only half *** attempted to grind/polish it and it is down from a very gritty maybe 15 pounds (who knows, I could not measure it) to around 3.5-4 pounds and smooth as butter. I got lucky so I am not going to touch it again.

Barry references another video during this one where he installs travel screws but I have not been able to find it yet:
