Yet Another Gun Thread
#1487
Just bought a 1954 CZ52 (vz52) off a local guy. Paid $100 for the gun, two magazines and 40 rounds of ammo. When I got home and stripped it I found the gun has a broken roller. A weak spot from what I have heard and will have to be replace for $35 (I'm in the wrong business!). Still, not a bad price. It will take some time to get used to the euro style mag release. It feels pretty stiff but I think some cleaning will help out.
7.62 x 25 ammo is 18.1 cents per round if I buy in bulk ($145 worth).

Nevermind, I found a parts diagram. I also found a place selling rollers for $12 a pair. Replace them both.

So I am applying the first coat of poly to the Mosin stock.
It looks like crap honestly. Whatever the Russians used for stain in 1942 was some good stuff. It was so deep in the wood that I ended up sanding off a ton of material and could not really go any farther. So parts are more or less clean, and others still have stain. Plus I have not bothered to work on this without at least a beer or two in me.
Add to that the fact that I really don't feel like trying to correct the blochyness. So I am just putting 3 coats of hard satin poly on it and I'll see how it does. If it is simply too terrible to bear and has ugliness such that I cant shoot decent groups due to laughing and face palming, I'll get a synthetic stock for 60 bucks. I spent the better part of that on poly and sand paper lately anyway.
I would post pics, but I cannot find the stupid cable to link the digi to the computer.
I'll find a way to get them up soon.
The good news is that the rifle could not possibly look much worse than when I bought it. It had decent looking rifling and I felt like shooting a gun that day. The looks were pretty far back on the priority list.
Also: Looking at reports online, 180GR SP rounds from Brown Bear and Winchester seem to perform really well, and the S&B stuff is over priced. Privi Partisan seems good, but more quality than I need in this cartridge/gun. Any experiences there? I plan on short range deer and hog hunting with it.

Russians used cosmoline and you need to use either a wood stripper or cosmoline removal chemical. The stuff is viscous and will consume every crack, crevice, or orifice on the rifle. After the firearms were built they basically just dipped them in barrels of the ---- and I hate it.
If I think about it and have time tonight, Ill post some pictures of my AK furniture post-stripping. For such bad quality wood it actually looks really nice even unfinished. All that's left is to dye and seal but I can't commit to doing it....
Edit: Wow, I really said it's viscous? That's true, it's sticky semi liquid substance, but I mean to say it's vicious... Have my jeep on the brain today, can ya tell?

Yes, part of my place has purple carpet. I might get a disco ball too.
Pics of effed stock attached.
It now had a couple coats of poly on it, and I don't really care enough to go back and re-sand. Plus there is not enough material left anyway.
Note the total lack of a step from the receiver area to the forward hand guards. I realized I had that down to almost nothing, and decided to go the whole way. The upper guard did not match the lower anyway. I did mostly free float the barrel. Which will make about .0000389bumpkis % difference in groupings.
I do think the rifle will look sort of cool though with a much lighter color to the stock and a much smoother line to it.
Edit: I plan on doing something with the buttplate area, just not sure what. It has been suggested that I cut and mold a buttplate from an Extra Gold can, and I am giving this serious thought.
