Educate me on California Tax laws for retail?

Educate me on California Tax laws for retail?
I need a little information on the retail sales taxes in California. Searched on Lougle but did not find specific detailed information in Engrish that I could comprehend.. Several pages on the actual tax laws in legal speak..
What I'm interested in is basically tax rates and applications for fast food establishments. I'm writing a database for a customer and quite honestly can't really make heads or tales of the tax rates and usage from HIS explanation.. Slight language barrier present also to make things more complicated.
If I'm understanding correctly taxes apply to the exact same items in different ways depending on the situation? Knew there was a lot of Californians here, hopefully someone can shed some light on this?
