Default Double check your car insurance quotes!

So back in September I received a letter from Progressive saying, "thank you for being a member for 1 year!", and something about being a bronze member. The letter had a chart explaining the number of years you've been a member, and what benefits/discounts you would receive depending on your level of membership.

Well, seeing that I've had them for 7-8 years, and should have been a platinum member (highest level), I got right on the phone. Talked to some guy about it and he went through my account and saw they had made a mistake and apologized over and over. He said it would be fixed and that I should receive a new letter with an updated membership level and I would receive a higher discount.

Now it’s November and still no letter, still no discount. Actually, my insurance went from $69 a month to $80 a month after that phone call! So naturally, I was pissed as ****. My gf just switched from Progressive to Travelers and her premium was almost cut in half! So yesterday I decided to check an online quote with them and see whats what.

Once I checked my online quote and saw the price, I just had to call and see if it was on point. I guessed at some of the questions, so I wasn’t sure how accurate the quote was. The guy I got on the phone was more than helpful, friendly, and got me an awesome price! He tells me that switching to them I would be keeping the same coverage Progressive had me on, but saving almost $200 every 6 months! ******* awesome! So now I'm down to $51.50 a month for the exact same coverage I had before.

Funny thing is, I never would have checked for another quote if Progressive hadn’t sent some bullshit paper thanking me for being a member. So **** you Progressive, and hello Travelers!

Thought I would share this with you guys in case any of you could be saving money without knowing it. Since quitting smoking cigarettes, lowering my att data plan (that I was paying double for), and switching my car insurance, I’m saving roughly $175 a month that I was just throwing in the garbage. In times like these, every god damn dollar counts and I can’t afford to be reckless with my spending anymore. It feels good to save money!

I just left Progressive too. I've been with them 10+ years with no claims. This year they doubled my rate due to 2 moving violations. I left them for Mercury Insurance at about 40% less than the new Progressive rate. Not a good way to do business....

My wife had nationwide on her '02 Saturn 4 door. We bought an '07 mazda cx-7 and got rid of the Saturn and her premium went down almost $100 every 6 months. I guess they say it's cause of the safety features of the cx7, just seemed funny to me at first.

I have multiple cars (3) and homeowners, as do both my parents (2 cars) and brother. That's 3 homeowners policies and 7 cars. State farm gives us fleet discounts, and they've never screwed any of us on a claim.

I switched to Progressive after making a small claim with GEICO, which essentially caused my rates to increase from 1500 a year to 6000. I was still being raped at 3600 a year, albeit not as much. After a few months, I grew weary of this and switched to USAA and my rates are currently a grand a year for full coverage on my Miata and Mustang GT. This is in NJ, which is notorious for high car insurance rates.

Moral of the story: GEICO is great until claims are made and Progressive merely blows.

Anyone eligible for USAA should probably just go with them. I've had multiple agents from multiple companies tell me that pretty much nobody else can touch their rates. The lady who hit my car 3 years ago had USAA and my claim was covered by them in a fairly smooth and painless manner.

I just left Travelers because I got sick of them playing the premium creep game. Every 6 months the bill would get a little larger, about 40-50 bucks at a time. It added up to a 30% increase in our premiums in a span of 2.5 years, even though we had no claims or tickets. **** that.

I had our broker shop around again, but also adjusted my coverage amounts upwards. I was at 50/100/50, but when you consider that a new top-o-da-line minivan is $40-45K and your car is also getting crunched when soccer mom pulls out in front of you, $50K property is low, at least in this part of the country. And nowadays if someone is suing you they're going to ask for a lot more than $100K in damages. Basically I upped my coverage to 250/500/100, which is not a bad idea for any of you guys who own significant assets (homes). If you're still a poor student or have no significant assets then your state mandated minimums are probably okay. And the difference between 50/100/50 and 250/500/100 coverage was really not that much. In fact, despite my new higher coverage limits, my premiums are now lower than they were before after switching companies.

Premium creep is real and it is horseshit. The companies know most people are lazy or complacent and will just pay the bill if the increase doesn't seem like much, and I was guilty of that laziness for too long. I now realize that if I'm not pro-active about shopping around every 2-3 years I'm probably screwing myself out of money.
